Crow won the 1957 Heisman while playing for Bryant at Texas A&M, rushing for 562 yards and making five interceptions in seven games. Bryant reportedly said if Crow didn't win the award that year "then they ought to quit giving it."

He was also the Aggies' only Heisman winner until Johnny Manziel won the honor in 2012. Crow was a first-round draft selection of the Chicago Cardinals in 1958, and was a four-time Pro Bowler during 11 seasons in the NFL.

Crow later served as an assistant under Bryant at Alabama from 1968-71. His son, John David Crow Jr., played at Alabama in the 1970s, later dying in a car accident in 1994.
He was later head coach at Northeast Louisiana -- now Louisiana-Monroe -- from 1976-80, Texas A&M's associate athletic director 1983-89 and the Aggies' athletic director from 1989-93. He retired from A&M's administration in 2001.

Crow, who would have been 80 next month, and his wife, Carolyn, lived in College Station and had two other children, Annalisa and Jeannie.
