🏈 Jalen Hurts article (link)

There was one game in '89 I'd characterize as a game where Hollingsworth lit up a defense: UT. He had almost 400 yards and three TD's in that game. Some might mention Ole Miss of '89 but that was Ole Miss of '89. Their eight wins that season aren't anything for a Black Bear fan to brag about.

Hey, Bama beat Penn State that season. He didn't throw a touchdown and threw four interceptions. In fact, the UT and OM games were the only two notable games where he had more TD's than INT's. Auburn, 2-2. LSU, 0-2. Miss. State, 0-2. That is the story of his '89 season.

He finished that season with 14 TD's and 16 INT's. At best I'd call his season mediocre and that's only due to the 10-2 record--it has nothing to do with his performance at the quarterback position. And a large part of the credit for those 10 wins falls at the feet of Stacy.

People look back and have fond memories of players on those teams. I believe that's largely due to the bad memories they have of Curry as well as the majority still living in the Bryant era in their imaginations and dreams.

Ol' Gary is a hell of a guy and one I'll remember and appreciate. But still, listening to people look back at those days? The vast majority of those I've talked with about him remember him far differently as a player than what he actually was...

Siran ended up player of the year I believe. Gary benefited from having Siran, Kevin KT Turner, Martin Houston, Murry Hill, Craig Harris, Marco Battle, Lamonde Russell, and others. Gary was weak as pond water but Coach Smith loved him because he was real cerebral and knew the playbook. Remember, he replaced HS Parade All-American Jeff Dunn, just a few games into the season. Behind Jeff, there was Gary, 4-5 of us walkons, and a true freshman, Ray Stanton in that meeting room.

I'm by no means happy to admit this, but that was a loss I saw coming--well, let's go with strongly feared. If you recall, Bama lost to Southern Miss to open that season. Southern Miss was the only loss Louisville had that season. UL only played two teams with winning records in '90 as I recall.

One of the early Favre comebacks was that '90 USM/BAMA game. We were up 24-20 late in the game when Siran took a toss sweep right pitch and crumpled to the ground on that Legion Field turf without a finger being laid on him. I too worried about that game in Tempe. We had overcome so many injuries and struggled to score points, that I worried about a shootout and what would happen if we fell behind.

See guys, this makes me a cringe a bit. I ran across it a few minutes ago while surfing around a bit. This discussion was centered around Mac Jones and what he's been showing so far in spring camp.

I admit that when we signed him (while also signing Tua), I was thinking, "Welp, that guy will never play a down for us, and he'll wind up transferring to FIU or somewhere."

Uh . . well, it now looks like Jones is showing out and has some nice potential. Could prove to be our next Gary Hollingsworth. (And that's a complement.)
He'd be on the bench. He'd be included in threads the following spring about players that are likely to transfer.

Gary wasn't supposed to be the headliner so maybe that comparison works for Mac. Wouldn't it be great to not miss on our QB recruits, even if it means a log jam at the position? Forget the bionic arms, I like guys who can throw the football with a sense of touch and consideration that the receiver has to catch it. From what I've seen Mac is more controlled touch than rocket-launcher.

Unlike the Gary Hollingsworth era, with so many QBs transferring out of programs, I don't know that the patience is there for guys to wait for time and circumstances to present themselves. Opportunities almost always materialize but there are a lot of Barnett like players out there these days. The numbers being run on the 4 and 5-star QBs transferring are quite alarming compared to just a decade ago. Unfortunately, our guys are all contemporaries of each other. One of our two freshmen really needs to redshirt and stay patient.

I think most of us realized that Kiffin was not a quarterbacks coach per se. That doesn't mean that he could not critique and advise quarterback, but he was certainly no norm chow. I do think Staples has a good point, and so do others on here. As the season progressed I think Jalen became tighter. Still very calm. Still a good leader. But I think it is also important to look at how teams adjusted hell they would approach him on defense. We have seen film that shows that he would often run laterally instead of stepping up when rushed. While he can throw on the run it is so much better if the quarterback can set his feet. Perhaps because of lack of cohesion or simply lack of good right guard play he was often under pressure quickly. This made his throws inaccurate when he had the correct read. Again, not being able to set the feet. Some people have panicked a bit because our new offense of coordinator didn't do well with the same title in the NFL. What others recognize is that he is definitely a coach. Meaning that he can coach Jalen more than just be a play caller. That will be very important for our quarterback progress moving forward.

I have a good friend who is a huge Alabama fan and says he wants no part of the team as long as Jalen is quarterback-of course he is being a complete dickhead. I have had others on here criticize me because I have stressed how important it will be for Jalen to improve, even though he was SEC offense of player of the year. The fact is that Jalen may have been a bit of a victim of playcalling when he was not able to perform well toward the end of the year. He was certainly a victim of playing against very good defenses toward the end of the year, Whose coaches recognized the best way to approach and defend him. He was further hurt by the fact that even cam Robinson did not do an excellent job in protecting him, and he was often under pressure immediately after the snap. Instead of being able to step back and go through his progressions, he would often have to hurry his throw to his second read, because Ridley was often covered up.

With good coaching this spring and fall, continued good playcalling that also recognizes how differences may approach him ( with Daboll having grown up coaching the defense of side of the ball and now having been on the offense of side he has a better appreciation than most in this regard), and better pass blocking, Jalen is set for an excellent sophomore year and good improvement. His demeanor, his leadership, and his athleticism show that the sky is the limit.

Concurred.

From what I was told Tua looks lost out there. Regardless I think he'll be a good one one day, maybe spring will get people to hop back on the Jalen bandwagon tho. I've seen way too many people shitting on our QB.

That just helps to show what a certified bad azz that Hurts is.
