šŸˆ Jackson State hires Deion Sanders as head coach.

I’m only about 90 minutes from Jackson. May try and go catch an open practice when they start. Be kind of cool to see those guys coaching together. I have no idea if any of them can coach but I’ve watched them play a ton of football

Never was a huge Deion fan because if his presentation but he was one that always seemed to back it up. As a coach? We shall see.

Not a fan of him personally, then again I lived in the same town as him, kids went to school together (same grades). The way he attacked his wife on social media during the divorce showed who he is. Regardless of all the preaching he likes to do.

Deion and Bo were freaks of nature. Buddy of mine ran track at Bama in the late 80’s (he has some great Derrick Thomas and Bennet stories, lived in the dorm some around those guys). Was at a meet that was where FSU was also playing a baseball game. Said Deion showed up just before a relay, took off his jersey and baseball pants and ran a leg of the relay. Had not warmed up or anything. And FSU won the race. Said he also did a long jump. Then went back to the baseball game.

His athletic ability was undeniable, but I was never a fan. Ran his mouth way too much. All those highlights in his career and the stuff that always sticks out in my mind are him and Andre Rison beating trading blows to the helmets like morons on the football field, and Carlton Fisk nearly killing Deion on the baseball field for running his mouth (and making "$" signs in the dirt at home plate). Even off the field, he acted like an idiot and threw ice water on Tim McCarver. Just a very unlikeable dude.

I can't stand the guy, but stories like that are so dang cool to hear. You just don't have that kind of all around athlete anymore that's able to do it all without putting in HOURS and HOURS of practice and basically focusing on one sport. You'll always have a few of the Kyler Murray's that can play baseball and football at a higher level than most, but to do it like Bo and Deon, almost unheard of in history even at the highest levels.

We'll see how well he recruits kids to come and play at Jackson St. I can't imagine Sapp and TO joining his coaching staff. He must surround himself with good assistant coaches if he wants to stay in the coaching profession very long. Having a nice budget for assistant coaches is probably not something Jackson St. has. Time will tell the story.

I just did a quick search on Glassdoor.com to try and get an indication of coaching salaries at JSU. The only one I found was the Head Women's Soccer Coach who made ~$51K. That may be 1/4 of the Head Football Coach's salary. Assistant coaches aren't likely to make much more.

OH he will recruit players he wants. This might be a blessing in diguse for SWAC.

I agree. My boss from 2008-2010 lived in his neighborhood outside of Atlanta. My boss was president of the HOA, was a very nice subdivision. Deion had an old satellite dish, the big ones, in his side yard. Was against the rules to have those up Where they could be seen. He sent a few letters and no response. Had to go to his house. Deion agreed to take it down but wasn’t happy about the threat of a fine. He took it down and laid it in the front yard so that you could see it through his fence and gate. A big ole satellite dish laying there. Wasn’t against the rules for some reason. Left it there forover a year.

Another time, when he was still playing, he erected a batting cage in his back yard. A no no, evidently. John started on him about it, letters, etc. He ignored. Made a visit and Deion got mad. He started just paying the fines. Then... he erected huge lights. Like would be on a baseball or football field. John said there were 6-8 of them. Lit up the whole neighborhood at night. Really pissed everyone off. Paid the fines for a long time then eventually disassembled it all.

Shocked that never got physical since it affected so many people. That's nuts.

For real! Needless to say, he wasn’t a very popular neighbor. John said it looked like the landing zone for the alien ship in Close Encounters of the Third Kind Movie when he’d turn on the batting cage lights. LOL And keep in mind, my boss John was all of 5’2ā€ and 250lbs, and very little muscle. He never said it, but I can’t imagine Deion not talking some big trash to him and making fun of him. He just had to have.

My buddy that ran track in the 80’s has some good stories about Derrick Thomas and Cornelius Bennet that I’ll post some day on a thread with them in it. Thomas was evidently A genuine, down to earth guy even after going to the league. Not so much for Bennett while in college or afterwards.
