Just curious about this as it relates to Andre Smith's knee.

For those who have had this injury or know anything about it, how long does it take to really get 100%?

Sprain = ligament
Strain = muscle

Thanks, now tell me which is more serious and how long does it generally take to heal?

I'd rather have a strain myself. Muscles heal well, and you can treat them with ice, heat, massage therapy.

It starts getting dicey when you talk ligaments and tendons, although in Andre's case, it doesn't seem to be a huge deal. Had he torn something it might be different.

And Terry, when you're done answering that, I've got this itchy rash, right down here, underneath my... :D

So Dre has the worst of the 2, but a mild case of it?

My son had a knee injury last Thurs night that the orthopedic said was a sprain. He was hit on his knee with a helmet/facemask and he was done after about three more plays. He had to be carried off of the field beforer half time. By the end of the game, he had swelling and fluid on the knee. The ligaments were strained due to force of the blow, but all intact. The orthopedic told him to wear a knee brace (the kind that has no metal, just a neoprene sleeve) to keep the swelling down. The fluid is the body reacting trying to heal the knee, and as of yesterday, the fluid was minimal. Today he is supposed to jog on it to test the pain level. If he can jog with little or no pain, then he is supposed to try to start making cuts. If he can do that, he can play Friday night. Under no circumstances, is he to take a hit to the knee or run the ball in full contact drills during practice. After practice, he is supposed to ice his knee, whether he thinks he needs it or not.
Hopefully, this is what happened to Andre. You or I would be laid up for weeks, but kids tend to heal alot faster than we do. Honestly, my son should sit a week to be safe, but I know just as sure as I'm sitting here, he will say there is no pain today so nobody even gets a chance to step into his spot. Andre has more riding on healing up than he does playing against Tulane.

Just being picky here, but the tendons fall in the same category as muscles as in it is a strain...tendons are connected to the muscle.

With Andre and his knee there are a lot of unknowns. As example, which ligament is the one sprained. One can take longer than the other to heal and then there is the severity of the sprain as well.

Yes, sprain. See above post as to severity...
