Gus Malzahn or Nick Saban?

It seems all the smoke regarding Texas’ next head coach is coming from the state of Alabama.
After Auburn won the Iron Bowl, Sports Illustrated derived a report linking Malzahn and Texas, where some of Malzahn’s closest friends said he called it his ‘dream job’.

According to a source, Malzahn has told friends privately that coaching the Longhorns is his dream job. If confronted with the choice between Auburn and Austin, it’s a no-brainer move for Malzahn to bolt. The best job in the Big 12 is a much more stable place than The Plains, as even a play-caller of Malzahn’s acumen isn’t likely to make adjustments to historical trends.

Malzahn responded to the report during his press conference, and he didn’t deny the report. Why? It’s good business, via AL.com.

“The response is, I’m tickled to death to be the head coach of the Auburn Tigers,” Malzahn said.

“I’m very blessed to be the head coach of the Auburn Tigers,” Malzahn said. “I really appreciate the guys that gave me this opportunity and believed in me. We are playing for the SEC championship, so it’s been a good year.”

Auburn AD Jay Jacobs has already said Malzahn will get an increase in salary and a possible contract extension after the season.

Pete Thamel hates Auburn and was basically just trying to bash their program in his article. Not saying Malzahn won't leave, but Thamel being the author of the article makes question its credibility.

If Texas calls he will be gone. No way Auburn can match them financially. And he could have long term success at Texas that Auburn probably can't give him.

The only schools that can match Texas financially are Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and USC. It might NOT be about money though.

Malzahn's comment was "I'm tickled to be the coach of Auburn." (PI can't find the original but very close to the original wording.) That is not a very convincing quote from a coach when asked about the rumors. I think there is more danger of him leaving Auburn than Saban leaving Bama. And yes, it isn't all about money. He saw Chizik get the boot 2 years after a BCS NC. He knows Auburn will not have much faith in him if he doesn't win consistently and he has to compete with some big teams in the SEC. Texas has an easier road really.

Our boosters have made it more difficult then it has to be for sure. I disagree about Texas being an easier path to a championship. It's the easiest path to a Championship GAME in the country but Texas isn't going to beat whichever SEC team they play there, they might not beat the PAC12 teams or the ACC teams either.

There are too many people pointing to Texas money, the talent found in the Texas high school ranks, and other small attributes that come with coaching the Longhorns without even bothering to mention what a dumpster fire that schools' administration is right now.

When you have about half of the BOR wanting Mack gone, but they don't have enough votes to force Powers to make a move, it's not a situation where anyone of their right mind would walk from a good job to one that has the potential to be good. (I'm not saying Malzahn is right in his mind. )

Can you imagine Saban being happy sitting in traffic for 2 hours each day - Austin has notoriously bad traffic for a town it's size.

My old boss had donated $5 million or so to the UT program over the course of his life and because of that he felt entitled to just drop in and chat with Mack Brown whenever he wanted. Or to view practice without an invitation. DeLoss Dodds or one of his staff members usually just accompanied the guy. Can you imagine Saban being happy with that scenario?

"Coach, sorry to interrupt practice but this guy is the one who gave us enough money to build the trophy case in the arena and cover the coaches toilets with gold and he wanted to check in on the teams progress and chat about some kid from Wichita Falls that his nephew says is the best quarterback he's ever seen."

Whether they are ignored, or not considered, is a question I can't answer.

The LHN alone is so "anti-Saban" I'm surprised people get caught up in all of this. Hell, the man limits his appearances here. To think he'd agree to have a TV spot a few times weekly?

With the exception of their obnoxious 'Bama-obsessed fan base that have only one real goal and that is to beat 'Bama, Auburn is a pretty nice city. Their down town area is a very great place to hang out and they have every thing you need in Auburn. Its much like Tuscaloosa, just not as spread out. But comparing it to Austin, I would live in Austin any day over any city.
