🏈 Is it just me, or is our QB the worst we've had since Spencer Pennington?

Coker just doesn't pass the eyeball test. He doesn't look good and neither does the offense.

Did you ever see David Smith or Gary Hollingsworth? I'm guessing no would be your answer. David was 6'0" 180 lefty that couldn't break a window pane with a throw. He was a gutty player though. Gary was 6'4" 185 and couldn't bench press 225 lbs ONCE!! Gary set a lot of records during the '89 season.

David Smith was one of my all-time favorite walk-ons. Gutty!

Hollingsworth made a living on the swing pass. Short, effective passing game. Homer Smith understood the limitations of his athletes.

I think we bought into what Jimbo Fisher was selling a bit too much when Coker transferred. I would be happy for him to play within his limits and be a "game manager". Let's be honest here. We haven't had a qb with the skills and mentality to excel at the next level since Coach Bryant's days. Starr, Namath and Stabler are up there in the pantheon of NFL greats, and Richard Todd had a decent run as a starter for the Jets. Since Todd, though, we've had backup quarterbacks, those who started a while but couldn't hold onto the job, and even several who realized fairly quickly that the NFL wasn't going to be their niche in life and went on to something else. Right now a QB with the skill level that Mike Shula had as a player, who performed to his ability level and didn't do the things that hurt his team would thrill me no end.

A discussion of Alabama NFL QBs would be incomplete without Jeff Rutledge. He hung around for 14 seasons, primarily as a backup with the Rams, Giants and Redskins, winning the Super Bowl with the latter two.

It hasn't played out fully so we will see. I think he can improve some and maybe Coker learns to limit mistakes. I doubt the improvement will be drastic based off what I've seen of Coker. I can almost guarantee this is not a championship team with him at the helm. If you take the crimson colored glasses off you will see the same.
