Iron Bowl doesn't bother me, but I normally just call it "The Auburn Game" or "the game against those goat-****ers down the road".

TerryP right, but it been call the Iron Bowl for so long it may still take a while before that name will be taken away from the game. My grand kids don't call it the Iron Bowl, it's the game Bama play again that other team from Alabama. That's my two granddaughters, I won't tell you what my grandson calls it. I drop him on his head when he was young. Well, everybody has at least one black sheep in the family!

That's the way I recall it as well. I've heard people say Bryant wanted to call it the "Brag Bowl" but I've never seen any documentation.

Just because it's not held at the old neutral site doesn't mean people from Tuscaloosa and even Auburn fans weren't part of the steel industry. They are still involved in the rivalry, so I don't think you tske that sway from them. I do think the title can go outside of the venue. It's the people that make the rivalry, not the location, save for Jacksonville and the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.

To me, it will always be the IRON BOWL. But, it lost something when the barn wanted to start the home and home scheduling. The 50/50 split in the crowd made the game special. Now, I still call it the iron bowl, but that's because it was that for over half of my life. I know the nickname for the game was becuase it was played in the iron city.
The bottom line is that I want Bama to kick blue and orange butts every year, no matter what the game is called.

Personally, I'm glad it is gone from Birmingham. Legion Field is NOT safe. Both the facility and the area surrounding it. It is still the Iron Bowl, just at different locations. Bryant Denny is WAY too nice not to use for the big game every other year. Jerkin-hair sux, but even it's better than what Legion Field has become. That is why the High School Football Championships left B'ham and moved to Tuscaloosa/auburn.

I loved the 50/50 split back in the day. But I'm one of the votes in the "Don't really give a damn" column. I still have a bumper sticker that says "Your ass on your grass" when the first game was played at the barn's field.

I'm still pissed off the SEC changed the "third Saturday in October" game to where it ain't sometimes.

Have you even read this thread? He said why he doesn't like it called the IB. In fact, listed two reasons.

I'm guessing the response was due to your mention of so many people with ties in the metal industries when there really isn't any longer.

Uh, yeah, I read what he had to say. And just because only 4% of the steel industry is in Birmingham means jack, because 4% could be a large part of a population. You outta think a hair further instead of jumping down my throat about an assumption. "ties in the metal industries when there really isn't any longer." How do you know whether there are ties or not and if they have anything to do with the rivalry? Once again, think a little harder.

I agree with @TerryP . It lost that name when we went home and home. I attended a few of those "Iron Bowl" games in Bham and was truly a crazy atmosphere with the 50/50 split.

You can't have it all. No one appreciated the rivalry being taken from Legion Field at the time. But Byrant-Denny Stadium came to life because of it and became the jewel we are now enjoying. Not playing the barners and the big boys in BDS seem just as wrong these days.

Since you've read what I've posted you've seen I dropped the ol' "OT" right before that statement (As well as a did you know.) It was an off the topic comment about how little the metal industry means to Birmingham today. It's been that way for almost a quarter of a century I'd guess .. if not longer.

4% could be a large portion of the population? There's a tad over 7200 metal jobs in Birmingham (US Bureau of Labor statistics)...with a population of over 220K.

Now, I'd go with "Law School Bowl" this year and "Vet School Bowl" next year ... :devil:
