Here's JPW's numbers through 8 games last year:

108 com 174 att 2 int 1230 yds 7 tds 62%

Now GMac's through 8:

121 com 202 att 3 int 1445 yds 9 tds 60%

Bama has won every game by double digits, aside from one.

Greg had a bad game against South Carolina, but that's it. I'm not saying he's setting the world on fire with his passing game, but he also isn't an albatross on a championship caliber team.

Argo, it would be nice if the media looked at the stats and then they might get a clue. I think they want to bash Greg and the passing game because it started out so hot and was out of sync for the Ole Miss and USCjr games. Unlike others, I saw that Greg has gotten some confidence back in the UT game. The only thing missing were a couple of big explosive plays.

Of course they'll tell you they are referring to the last game or two, but that is a slippery slope for them. What's next? Calling inept for a bad half, or quarter, or series, or play?

I believe CNS had some issue with the way the offense had gotten bottled up the past couple weeks. There really hasn't been an effort to take chances and go downfield with the ball. Rest assured, LSU will use the downfield pass to those great receivers of their's to try and open up the running game some. I suggest we do the same. Unlike JPW, I really think that McElroy, with his accuracy, can be a true threat to throw the bomb. We just haven't been doing it.

Heck, I even think our receiving corp, which is pretty good in it's own right, is more well-suited to out-running defenders down the field.

Over the past decade, coaches have come and coaches have gone, so have players, but when we've thrown caution to the wind and thrown the ball down the field, we've gotten some awesome results.

Let's challenge their secondary Saturday.

i think Gmac is doing ok and for a rookie is doing exceptionally well. there are two things wrong with the passing game.

1) receivers dropping good passes too often

2) Gmac getting happy feet and perceiving a rush that is non-existent. He isn't taking his time with his reads because he thinks he's about to be pummeled from the left side of the line on every pass play. He has to have more faith in his line and get used to being hit hard. that's part of being a QB in the SEC and for the rest of his pro career.

#1 is fixable and will get better
#2 is not-fixable and is related to a mental state of our QB

that being said, even if #1 alone gets better, we're looking at 60 or more yds/gm in the passing game which would also help us flip the field and keep field position more often.

my opinion is that since we have been scoring so few touchdowns and field goals are a plenty even from 40+ yards, lets take numerous shots at the endzone in the net few big games once we're near the 30 yd line going in. every set of downs, let's load up and throw into the end zone. what would it hurt? if we get picked it's unlikely to go for six from that far back so it's the equivalent of a good punt into their territory which puts our D back in good position. OPEN it up.

conversely, if we get a 1st and goal from the 7 yd line or closer, RUN THE STINKING BALL or rollout pass with the option to throw the ball away.

Doubt if any QB in the country, who has played 5 of the Top 17 teams in Pass Defense, as has GMac, has those kind of #'s. The 5 are SC(3), VT(8), ut(15), UK(16), UM(17). FWIW, LSU comes in at #24.

No question, our drop off in offense has been directly related to the quality of the defenses we have played of late. That perceivd inadequacy is also indirectly related to the way we've been calling the game, offensively. Look, I could see as plain as anyone that we played NOT TO LOSE against Tennessee, and it nearly cost us. This is a big game coming up. This isn't a trap game, or anything like that. This game stands between us and the National Semifinal, formerly known as the SECCG.

What bugs me a bit is what happens when we move to 9-0. Notice I said "when we move to 9-0". I worry about the trip to Starkvegas a little, and I worry about the trip to Lee County even more. No, I don't think Auburn is anywhere near ours or LSU's caliber, but the best teams don't always win the Iron Bowl. In recent years they have, but the history or this series has been crazy.

Against Tennessee, Greg's passes were much more accurate than in the 2 previous weeks and with many of the incompletions, the UT DB's/CB's executed brilliantly. The ball was also thrown where only the BAMA player had a chance to catch the ball, unlike the USCe game. Translation....no interceptions.
