Sports-talk radio personality Ian Fitzsimmons has left Birmingham's WJOX 94.5 FM to join ESPN 103.3 FM in Dallas.
Fitzsimmons will appear on the afternoon drive-time show "Galloway & Company" with host Randy Galloway. He said this morning he begins working in Dallas on Tuesday.
"The opportunity to do a show with a guy like Randy Galloway, with a longer contract, is just the opportunity of a lifetime," Fitzsimmons said. "But I will truly miss everything about Birmingham."
In Dallas, Fitzsimmons also will host pre- and post-game coverage of the Dallas Cowboys. At WJOX, Fitzsimmons co-hosted the midday show "The Roundtable" with Lance Taylor.
His last day on the air here was Wednesday, and he said today that he regrets that he did not get the chance to tell his listeners goodbye on the air.
"JOX was tremendous," he said. "That was two of the best years and the most fun I ever had doing radio."

Ian knows everything. You can ask him if you don't believe me.

His and Lance's stance on recruiting really bothers me. They act like it's of no importance and rarely talk about it.

Bye bye Ian, and please, don't come back.

Ian was in Salt Lake for about a year before going to Alabama. Basically got run out of town on a rail for offiending BYU fans delicate sensibilities because he a) didn't constantly kiss their ass, and b) said things like 'damn' and 'hell' once in a while. I actually quite liked him while he was here, but since that was in comparison to our ridiculously bad local hacks, that's probably not saying much.

I rarely listen to his show, but this topic and the other recent Ian exit from the B'ham media makes me wonder...

Has a radio personality (or sportswriters) ever left one of our local markets and folks not been happy about it? Seems folks celebrate the event every single time. And for the record, I don't take issue with that, it just seems a bit funny when you think about it.

I could see some folks being pissed if say Cecil Hurt bolted to write for the Houston Cronicle... but I can't think of another writer or radio personality (without UA ties) that could up and leave with folks shedding much of a tear. This seems especially true with radio guys though...

You bring up a good point Brandon.

Frankly, and I listened to the Roundtable a few times a week, Ian never did anything that I found inflammatory. Sure, I didn't agree with some of the things he said. But, the guy was good at his job.

Evidently I'm not the only one who thought so. Dallas isn't what you would call a small market.

I listened to the guy everyday because no other sports show is on besides Jim Rome. I just didn't care for his "know it all" attitude. Maybe they will replace him with "Apache". ;)
