šŸ“” "I would think that this would lead to the implementation of the death penalty by the NCAA."

Maryland president Wallace Loh says he would expect North Carolina to get the "death penalty" over the academic allegations that have hung over the athletic program since 2010.

"As president, I sit over a number of dormant volcanoes," Loh said during a University of Maryland senate meeting Thursday, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. "One of them is an athletic scandal. It blows up, it blows up the university, its reputation, it blows up the president.

"For the things that happened in North Carolina, it's abysmal. I would think that this would lead to the implementation of the death penalty by the NCAA. But I'm not in charge of that."

A Maryland spokesperson later said in a statement that Loh's comments were "not a reflection of personal beliefs about the university or its leadership."

Joel Curran, vice chancellor of communications at North Carolina, said school officials were taken aback by Loh's statement.

"We were surprised that a sitting university president with no direct knowledge of our case would choose to offer such uninformed and highly speculative opinions," Curran wrote in an email.

The Tar Heels won a men's basketball national title this month amid the shadow of an NCAA investigation into the school's long-running academic fraud scandal involving athletes in numerous sports, tied to irregularities in an academic department from 1993 to 2011 and leading to five broad-based charges against the school that include lack of institutional control.

-Maryland president Wallace Loh, on the academic allegations against North Carolina

The NCAA began investigating the program in 2010, reopened its inquiry in summer 2014 and first charged North Carolina in a notice of allegations filed in May 2015. The NCAA revised the charges in a second version in April 2016 and changed them again in a third version filed in December.

The investigation is currently delayed while the school and the NCAA work on a new schedule for North Carolina to file its response to the third NOA, as the attorney for a woman at the center of the scandal said he is working to set up an interview after she had previously refused to speak with investigators.

North Carolina men's basketball coach Roy Williams said before the national title game that his program in particular did nothing wrong.

"Were there some mistakes made? You're darned right there were. Were there some things I wish hadn't happened? You're darned right. But there were no allegations against men's basketball," Williams said. "Do I believe again that our institution, there were some mistakes, you're darned right I do. I'm very mad, sad, ticked off, any way you want to put all that terminology about it, embarrassed and all those things too."

Williams' program is referenced along with the football team in the third NOA, though no coaches or program staffers are charged with misconduct.

Williams said the length of the investigation in some ways has been a punishment for his program.

Maryland head sees UNC shutdown for scandal

Mr. President is probably going to be apologizing before the days out. But NC basketball still looks like it's full of McDonald's All-American types to me, so what Roy Williams is talking about already costing the program is beyond me, he should check out Ole Miss recruiting for collateral damage done, before the fact.

I just can't get over them blasting Ole Miss for for giving a few bucks to recruits and such, yet the core of the NCAA gets violated at North Carolina, and the display of inhumanity at Baylor that has no room in society whatsoever and they haven't received anything. Technically Ole Miss hasn't either at this point, but they sure are moving on that at a much higher rate and have made comments about future punishment.

"A paper filled with plagiarism and a suspicious grade on a transcript cracked open what experts say is the worst academic fraud in NCAA history. This timeline tells the tale, with links to key stories and documents."

They have many the documents and timeline of events here. The latest events aren't reflected on the timeline, I tweeted one of their employees to nudge them on keeping things updated. It's missing many events that have happened in the last 9 months.

Guide to the UNC academic fraud scandal | News & Observer

I am still amazed how some schools are covered with Teflon (nothing sticks). I'm not only thinking about UNC currently, but Florida State, Tennessee, Auburn, Notre Dame, ... the list goes on. Oh well, that's life in the NCAA.
The same thing was said about USC when a lot were saying "they are going to skate." There was a long time delay there as well.
The same thing has been said about Ole Miss in the last few years. Again, a long time delay with the Black Bears.

Both of those examples had their cases prolonged due to actions of their own along with the drawn out process that is the NCAA and its compliance. Saying UNC is "covered with Teflon" here doesn't fit.

They've just received their third, amended notice of allegations after receiving the first almost two years ago to the date. In the second, references to the football and basketball programs were redacted. In the third, they are back in the letter which reads a lot like the first one. About a month ago UNC said they hadn't filed an appeal but news/reports have them doing so recently.

I don't see the NCAA being Dylan Thomas fans as they consider what their next move will be.

But...the "death penalty " will never be issued again....
Even for habitual hard case offenders......
SMU got it in 80s and have never recovered....
Thats really harsh

Really harsh? Raping and beating women and covering it up isn't harsh? The whole basis of college is academics, so cheating and giving out false grades to be eligible, all while creating a false transcript and even diplomas for completion of courses that weren't even real, not harsh? Covering up child molestation in efforts of maintaining a higher level football program, not harsh? Come on man, in this day in age society has such a bad issue with short term memory and continues to allow it's citizens to be abused for the almighty dollar. Peg their asses and let them know this shit won't stand. Don't want "harsh" treatment, then do your fucking job as an institution of higher learning and give a safe environment for ALL students, not just ones that make you cash on the field. Want a football team, follow the fucking rules.

It's hard to really say what any university has coming to them. The biggest problem I have with punishment is it's never equal, even with similar charges. The other is the lack of integrity on the part of the entity doing the investigation. The Miami Hurrican investigative fiasco was grievous enough to warrant shutting down the NCAA. Grandstanding in the Penn State situation and then feeling impelled to give back vacated wins and scholarships, just reeks of amateurism. Bama could and have written books on how the NCAA stray off the reservation during these unbiased and fair inquiries.

Even with similar charges the sanctions really can't be equal. Just as an example, a 30 scholarship loss at Ole Miss versus a 30 scholarship loss at a school like USC. Which one rebounds more quickly? It's still almost impossible to make the punishments equal, their effect? I'd argue a 20 scholarship loss at Ole Miss would hurt that program more than a 30 scholarship loss at USC.

I would agree that USC would and could rebound quicker than an Ole Piss because of their brand.

I wonder how much the words "vacated wins" have been tossed around the COI members when they've discussed UNC. I know that's really a slap on the wrist, but I can see its impact as well. That changes the legacy of Dean Smith and in a way the legacy of UNC. It's certainly tarnished.

Here's the thing with a school like UNC. Let's assume they get hit with the loss of ... five per over three years. We're now looking at eight on scholarship. How big of an impact would that be? FWIW, they normally average around a 15th ranked class in recruiting. They were top five a few years ago and look to fall outside the top 25 this year.

Attorney wants Greg Sankey off NCAA hearing regarding UNC

An attorney working to defend the University of North Carolina in an ongoing academic scandal does not want SEC commissioner Greg Sankey to be a part of the NCAA panel weighing in on the situation due to a perceived conflict of interest. The attorney went so far as to suggest it would be like having an SEC official refereeing a championship game between an SEC and ACC school.

Attorney Elliott Abrams issued his request to have Sankey removed from the panel to the NCAA earlier this month. In it, Abrams claims Sankey ā€œhas a personal, professional and institutional interest in the outcome.ā€ The point Abrams is attempting to make is anything bad that happens to the UNC program instantly hurts the ACC as a whole and gives the SEC an edge in whatever perception battle Abrams thinks Sankey is out to defend.

That seems a bit far-fetched, as NCAA panels are routinely made up of representatives from across the NCAA landscape, and Sankey has never given a hint of jeopardizing his integrity before over such an issue. Few would honestly think the SEC commissioner would do all he could to slam another program in another conference merely because ā€œit just means moreā€ in the SEC.

It should be noted neither the SEC or UNC has commented on this request.

Of course, this was just one bit of the silly stuff coming out from attorneys in the state of North Carolina today. In a separate story, lawmakers in North Carolina proposed a bill that would threaten to pull both UNC and NC State out of the ACC if the conference were to boycott the state again due to the state’s controversial bathroom laws.

The idea of UNC and NC State suddenly hitting the realignment free agent market is fun to think about in a hypothetical sense, but this may be more of another example of politicians playing to their base and nothing more will come of it.

Right.....but an institutional isnt a person....treat the ones responsible....as they did with PSU.... and fully agree.....what happened at PSU and Baylor...were worse then what happened at SMU from a human standpoint...
And if any institution was goong to be removed from athletics for the failure of righteousness...it would have been PSU

But the leaders in charge of the institution were behind the corruption and hiding it in efforts not to soil the institution. It goes to the top, so I think you blast the entire body. Allow immediate transfers to the innocent, but bury their asses. Set the tone.
