Which fans were the first to thrown oranges onto the field? Knowing that there team was going to the Orange Bowl.

I'd bet the tradition started after people started carrying Roses for that bowl...

The first time I saw it done was by Nebraska.....I remember them stopping the game and the ref coming over to the sideline and talking to Tom Osborne. Osborne then goes to speaking over the stadium PA system via the refs microphone. Osborne was pleading with the folks to stop throwing the oranges onto the field. Looked kind of gay with him humped over the Refs chest hollering into his little microphone clipped on his chest.
