For years I automatically said the SEC was the best conference in college football. I no longer say that without qualification.
My reason is this: The SEC doesn't play anyone that is even decent during the season. I look at nonconference schedules in the SEC and I see a bunch of teams that no one has heard of.
I can't take a group of 12 teams and say they are better than the other 100+ when they don't play the other 100+ teams! The SEC's best nonconference win this year was Florida over FSU, but FSU is down.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Yes. First, you're ignoring the eight conference games we do play, so we face a few "decent" teams in our conference schedule. Second, home and away series are hit and miss as to the kind of year the opponent is having. Clemson was touted as the ACC favorite and a NC contender this year. Other BCS conference teams SEC teams played this year included Texas, Georgia Tech, NC State, West Virgina, UCLA, Louisville, Wake Forest, FSU, Miami, Arizona State and Duke. Non-BCS games included Tulsa, Troy, No. Ill and Wyoming.
Upcoming Bama nonconference schedules include matchups with Penn State, Virginia Tech and Notre Dame. In recent years, we've also played Oklahoma and UCLA. We usually play one home and home series a year, or perhaps a neutral site game. It's nonproductive to do so against a non-BCS team. That's just the way it is. If Utah continues to play well, I encourage you to do what other successful mid-majors have done - join a BCS conference.
