I thought the way i worded that would draw attention. Lol. But seriously, i need ammo for one of those debates. Im sure thats been discussed on here but im too lazy to look. Lol. And as always, im talking to an auburn fan. He is pretty level headed but he ALWAYS like to bring this crap up.

I never argue with them. I just tell them regardless of how you count them, Alabama has at least 4 times more than they do, and could be as many as 7 times as many.

Believe me, ive tried that. But of course, he said if they counted championships like we do, the barn would have 4-7. All i can do is laugh and feel the urge to just slap him and shake the crap put of him. Lol. If only he didnt live in oregon.......btw, he's a duck fan too so thats some more crap i have to hear about their unstoppable offense and everything else. Which he has somewhat of a point on that. Even tho we havent played them YET.

why argue, who cares what they think - if you want to have fun, take the offensive - ask him how many championships has Phil Knight bought yet @ Oregon....

I was at the LSU/Oregon game last year in Dallas - that offense was supposedly unstoppable last year too - they had all summer to get ready. Tell him, win all your games - beat USC twice and we'll find out.

The school claims 14, the NCAA actually recognizes us as having 18 National Championships. They say 18 because there are other organizations (committees, magazines, etc.) that were around in the past that the NCAA recognized as having "official" National Champions. The main reason that ESPN and other douchebags want to dispute 5 of our titles is because they were pre-AP Poll (before 1936)... the main argument here is that almost every year multiple teams were named National Champions, primarily because #1 rarely EVER played #2 in a bowl game and alot of times National Champions were selected BEFORE the bowl games (even in the Poll era that happened). There were so many shared championships in those days is the main argument.

The 1945, 1962, 1966, 1975, and 1977 teams are recognized by the NCAA as championships for Alabama. In '45 Alabama was undefeated and beat the hell out of USC in the Rose Bowl, but Army was also undefeated and #1 pretty much the whole year so they were given the "official" National Championship and AP National Championship. The National Championship Foundation picked Alabama as the National Champions tho and the NCAA recognized it but Alabama doesn't.

'62 Alabama was 11-1 and despite USC almost being unanimously selected champion Billingsley selected Alabama. Alabama lost to an unranked Georgia Tech that year, USC went undefeated.

'66 is one of the more controversial ones in NCAA history (there is a really good book called "The Missing Ring" you should check out), Alabama was 2-time repeating National Champions and was looking for the near impossible 3-peat. They went undefeated the entire year destroying almost everyone they played including 6 shutouts, and 4 in a row. Despite being unquestionably the most dominating team in the country, and obliterating the much bigger Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl they were voted #3 at the end of the year. Now, there is and was ALOT of controversy over this for many reasons. 1) #1 Notre Dame played #2 Michigan State during the season and with the game tied late in the game Notre Dame's coach played for the tie, running the clock out instead of trying to win the game (could you imagine Bear Bryant even THINKING about that?) not wanting to risk turning the ball over and possibly losing. Despite that Alabama NEVER jumped either team and neither Notre Dame or Michigan State played in a bowl game (thats part of back in the day college football i still dont understand). The AP & Coaches Poll gave Notre Dame the National Title (OVERWHELMINGLY so) and one other entity gave MSU their share. The Berryman Foundation is the only gentility to give Bama the championship but pretty much noone honors it (other than the NCAA itself) so neither does Alabama. Now, the biggest part of controversy is the theory of WHY Alabama wasn't given the respect it deserved. Primarily because of the race factor. This was smack dab in the middle of the civil rights movement and Alabama remained all-white and many saw its dominance in football as proof of the white race being superior (ignorantly on both sides of the argument) and many people in the media (and in the public outside of Alabama) sat the blame right at Bear Bryant's feet as to why Alabama's team wasn't integrated yet (now Bryant had his reasons but it can be argued that he should have acted sooner but thats another argument for another time). Some felt it was the media's way of "sending a message" to Bryant and Alabama.

In 75 Alabama was 11-1 (lost the opener to Missouri and then won every single game of the year by double digits until the Bowl Game which it won by 6). There was 4 teams given a share of a National Championship that year (Alabama, Arizona Sate, Oklahoma, & Ohio State) and Alabama was the only one to only get a national championship from one entity (Matthews) and they dont claim it.

In 77 Alabama again 11-1 (and beat #1 USC during the year), #5 Notre Dame (which lost to an unraked Ole Miss that was beaten by 20+ by Alabama) beat #1 Texas (beat the dog sh*t out of them) in the Cotton Bowl and jumped #2 Alabama to win the National Championship. The Football Research Foundation gave Alabama the National Championship but Arkansas, Notre Dame (almost unanimous), and Texas (yes even after getting monkey stomped in the bowl game) were also given shares.

I know I rambled some but I've done an essay on this and on the '66 team (and on race in college football).

Nice post and very informative. I got to say Birdman, I had you all wrong a couple of years back. You have become one of the board's better posters and I appreciate what you bring to this site.

Pleasantries aside, I was only 10 years old during the '77 debacle but remember it well. The sportswriter's logic was, "well, Notre Dame beat number 1 so they deserve number 1". I remember Tom York, a morning news anchor in Birmingham for WBRC TV, channel 6 (and also where my Grandfather was Chief Engineer) bringing the head football coach at Ole Miss (Steve Sloan or maybe Ken Cooper...cannot remember) to the station and giving them a mock National Championship trophy. York used the same terminology when he presented the mock trophy by saying, "you beat number 1, you deserve to be #1".

I believe I was still in high school when I joined this site so lets just say I've "matured and mellowed" since then... and actually a Journalism major so stuff like this makes my mouth water because I've done so much research on these kinds of things over the last 2 years that I got this stuff leaking out of my ears.

Jesus Christ.

I don't know why Auburn fans bother with this argument. I'm not going to bicker about titles when regardless of the number, it'll be less than Bama. Who gives a damn?

Count me among the AU fans that does not claim the other titles. If the school doesn't recognize it, I don't.

ND didn't start going back to bowl game until 1969. It was the school that kept them from going to bowl games. The big 10 well the only one that could go was the one that won the big 10. That was the Rose Bowl too. Not until I think it was 1976 was others big 10 school were allow to play in bowls games.

Congrats on your college studies. I think I would have enjoyed Journalism. I continue to "mature and mellow" and I am 45. LOL!

This reminds me of a story I heard about about Joe Namath.
A big thing in the news back then was about CFB players taking really easy majors. A reporter asked him if he was majoring in basket weaving. Joe replied to him "No, journalism. It's easier"

:icon_twisted:

I can identify with that. It's not a bad thing unless you're asked "where did you read that?"

If you're like me, you probably won't recall where, but have no doubt you did.

Thanks birdman. Very helpful, except my eyes r a little dry and blury now. Lol. And those links were very helpful crazy and philly. I posted the...waiting on response. He posted a gameday pick where they r talking about how we have only 8 (an older pic), and he said, see, that proves it. I damn near chocked laughing so hard. Lol. I told him to check out those links and especially look at the ncaa championship records, since he firmly believes their ruling on the scam newton situation. The way i have looked at the subject is....Espn and other idiots who hate Alabama, only look at the championships AFTER 1936 when the AP poll was formed. Which tells me that the old preAP system wasnt good enough to recognize those championships won by schools prior to the AP. Well if we go by that way of thinking.....then why should we even recognize the championships won during the AP era now that the BCS was formed in the 90s. I mean, wasnt the BCS created to have a better system than JUST the AP to declare a national champion? And if we're gonna do that, should we stop recognizing any of the championships won up to now when the 4 team playoff starts? Because u know the 4 team playoff was created because the BCS system has flaws in determining a national champion. But we all would think that auburn fans wouldnt want to think that way. That would take away their 2 chapionships they have. Its all just biased. I love that we're hated THAT bad. Lol
