šŸˆ How many bowl games will we see this season?

Am I the only one expecting 90% of the bowl games to be canceled anyway? I hope Liberty makes one if they have most of them, but I just don't see it happening with these lower tier bowls.

I do not see how they are going to get all the bowls to work. I expect more than a few cancellations. Most sports are doing a bubble for playoffs in order to ensure the games happen and there are still issues at times. You can't tell me that enough kids from 4-6 Pudunk U are going to do the right thing long enough not to catch the Rona so their team can play in a meaningless game against 3-4 Backwoods State.

Five or six years ago Forbes had a reported on the games being played and at that time the number was in the mid-30's. At that time it was well documented that at least 10, and as many as 20, schools lost money by attending those games.

There are about 10 more games now; 44 I believe was the original number back in January. It's safe to say a quarter of the games scheduled would have cost teams to attend. With COVID comes another obstacle.

I think 90% is high. What percentage of games have been canceled versus scheduled so far this season? When we start talking about a school making some money on this trip—and we know how much these athletic departments need the money—it leads me to think there's going to be a lot of motivation by athletic directors driven towards their coaching staffs: get it done.

(How many of these games were scheduled to be televised by ESPN? Is this another situation where we'll read about a "get woke, go broke" moment for their leadership?)

How many will we see....?....how many will i see...3... playoffs...unless bama is in 1

bowls are prehistoric.....season over.... 8/9 pm starts...shit for announcers...

( may watch a game or 2 on new years day if wx shitty outside)
.
Could add 4 games.....CFPs.....soon

The economics of each bowl will determine whether or not we'll see them. The Pinstripe Bowl was cancelled. Getting visitors to NYC with all the COVID-19 restrictions is almost impossible. Remember that bowl games were created as an economic effort for the cities where they're held. The city pitches in a few incentives and in return they get tax revenue from hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, rental cars and airport taxes. How many of those things have been impacted by COVID?

ok....agree on this....
You knows California is ....well...California.....
They have restrictions this year..this month in San Francisco area...thats not permitting the 49ers to play home games...
And we know the first round ofCFPs are in California...Rose Bowl...
What are chances....that venue will permit that game to be played...and with attendance.... ...?

wonder if arrangements have been made to move game....

All I care about is the playoff Bowl Games & New Years Day bowl games. That's it.
I don't believe that to be 100% true. Weigh it against my perspective.

I want to see Ole Miss and Kiffin in a bowl game. I believe you could find a team or two in several conferences you'd watch. Napier and the Cajuns, Cristobal and the Ducks (depending on uniform,) seeing Texas lose...a few, ya know?

I'd watch those games with a buddy & a beer if I was invited but I wouldn't clear my own schedule for it like I would for New Year's Bowl games & playoffs.

I am over watching former assistants play their bowl games. I live in GA.... I am over it.

I guarantee you that another bowl will make themselves available for the CFP (if COVID regulations allow). Attendance may still be limited to 20-25%, but some revenue is better than none.

We're getting into the difference between a football fan, and an Alabama fan who watches other games. You'll choose under the shade, mid-field at BDS and I'm begging for middle of the endzone seats. You'll choose watching the game through CBS and I'm streaming All-22 through Chromecast.

This got split off to a new thread, so I'll expound a bit on my thought. First off, as @TerryP mentioned, I probably overshot with the 90% estimate, but I was trying to make a point while probably being a bit extreme. I honestly had no idea how many bowl games there were (though it's too many IMO - yes, I do think there is such thing as too much football [when it is really bad football]).

I think the major bowls, the New Year's Day group and some others like the Peach and the Florida Bowls will try to do everything in their power to hold the games. The issue, obviously is the impact the bat flu will have, not just with the teams, but with the respective bowl sites (like in CA as mentioned). Bowls would be held after Christmas break, and while some schools may opt to keep their guys on campus and in the preverbal "bubble", most won't, and honestly shouldn't for what would amount to a worthless (non-playoff) bowl game. Players are going to want to go home. Many players need to go home. But doing so, will cause the virus ripple effect that we inevitably get from doing such things.

It is a high risk, high reward situation. And we have seen how conferences handle such things... some like the SEC and ACC are more aggressive in their push to play games, others like the PAC-12 and B1G are much more tentative. If a bowl game is successfully played, then that is a win for everyone involved... the schools, the TV side, the bowl sponsors, etc. But it is a risk that will be weighed by each bowl, and I could see many of them canceling either because of political pressure or because they want to play it safe. If they do play most of the bowls, I'd think the only way it would work would be if teams flew to the bowl site the day before (like an in-season game), but that would take away much of what bowl week is about for the players. But by not doing so, you risk wasting a lot of money on travel, lodging, etc. if the game ends up being called 24-48 hours before kickoff because of positive tests.

Now, as mentioned, I think the big bowls and the playoff bowls will do everything possible to play, but even with those guys, I bet things are heavily altered in terms of how teams go about their business leading up to those games.

This brings something else to mind, @Brandon Van de Graaff .

With bowl invitations comes more practice time. If they are allowing any team in for a bowl game (no win requirement in 2020) how does that translate to how long a team can practice? The more bowls canceled the less likelihood teams get that extra few weeks. It's a big deal building to spring.
