But those schools didn't change their mascot 3-4 times in about the same number of years either. Stanford has been the Cardinal since 1981. Southern Miss became the Golden Eagles in 1972!! Ole Miss......I'm a Rebel, I'm a bear, I'm a beer?

Stanford is Cardinal, like the color, not like the bird (similar to the Harvard Crimson). Stanford has no mascot. The tree is part of the band and represents a tree that is nearby.
