🏈 Here's a very telling statement from Saban on Jacob Coker. (UPDATED with news out of FSU)

You can definitely see the improvement from those spring highlights to the season; going through his reads a bit more, release seems a lil quicker too. His arm is def. strong and I love his mobility.

Coker also looks like he stares down receivers and doesn't protect the ball very well. I saw many passes that shouldn't have been thrown or were inaccurate. I'd like to see him work on decision making and progressions. Lots of turnovers for so few snaps.

We need a "High Five" button on here! You just got one!

This could be uploaded...

(I was talking to Lance just the other day wondering how we could add a facepalm button...)

I talked with a friend of mine last night who lives in the Mobile area that I'd describe as a good acquaintance of the Coker family, but not what I'd call good friends (if that makes sense.) He has some pretty good relationships with some around FSU...anyway.

One of the things he said last night was many on the FSU staff felt Coker was more mobile in the pocket than than Winston. He's not saying faster in a 40, but instincts combined with knowing when and where to scramble led them to say "more mobile."

<!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: dbtech_usertag_mention --> @planomateo <!-- END TEMPLATE: dbtech_usertag_mention --> One of the reasons he mentioned Winston won the job is something we've discussed in this thread: intermediate routes and his touch on those throws. While he did develop more throughout this season by that point the job was Winston's.

Seems to me the main difference to me between Coker and Winston is the intangibles. I've read something that Fisher had been planting the seed his RS year, getting him involved in the conversations during the games with Manuel. Basically giving Winston an advantage if you will, iirc Winston was the #3 QB during their camp...what team does the #3 QB practice with?

I might be going out on the limb a bit here, but I'd say its safe to say that Coker really didn't have a chance at being the starter with Winston there.

Looking back on their game against Auburn, it certainly seems that Fisher choose right, but we'll never know what Coker could have done as those cards weren't played. That team wants to fight for Winston is what I saw...intangibles.

Color me unimpressed with Coker. I liked the way McCaron and McElroy both showed one thing that Coker hasn't yet. They showed the ability to secure the football and not force it into bad coverages. Coker in the plays so far has showed the opposite. If you watch the video there are problems with coverage and bad decisions. Maybe he will impress me in summer but so far I'm more excited about Sims

lmao Did you actually watch A-Day last year? AJ was pretty bad and that was heading into his third year... In fact all the QBs were... We (fans) have this discussion after every single spring about how terrible the QBs looked... Hell AJ looked better in freshman spring at A-Day imo but how exactly can Coker impress you in the summer? You gonna be hanging out in the weight room or watching 7-on-7s? Im excited about seeing what Sims can do too tho.

Id say Coker is probably just flat out faster (at least before the injury), Winston looks like he's running through mud at times.

Exactly, if he's running 7 on 7 and showing promise and improving in his own decision making then in the fall camp he will easily win the starting job. My one knock which you have to admit is a very legitimate concern is that he is not very good at securing the football. By comparison these are his stats for the year SIDE BY SIDE with McElroy and McCaron in their seasons before taking over the starting spot.

He's statistically behind in many departments, most notably some of the most important Nick Saban era statistics. Turnovers and CMP% things that we must dominate to win big games in the SEC. He is comparable to Sims but Sims is a better threat to run the ball. I like the pick-up but I wouldn't want to waste a Scholarship position on him, since we have comparable QBs already enrolled and working in Spring. If he Walks-on I'm all for it or if Kiffin sees something that he thinks he can do to make him better, I'm all for it. Just noting I'm not sold on Jacob Coker being THE PIECE TO THE PUZZLE we're missing right now.

Behind what? None of them threw more than 50 passes their entire careers before becoming a starter... You cannot compare stats, that are damn near identical (and dude having one interception, really?) from QBs who were playing mostly with scrubs and barely playing at all...

And he cant impress you in 7-on-7 because you'll never see any 7-on-7...

A legitimate concern about him not securing the football really?? Dude has ONE (1) INT.

Nobody has to be impressed with him other than the coaches and if he's being recruited by our coaching staff then he must be half decent or Saban is a moron?

So I shouldn't use statistics to validate my argument? Sims with statistically better numbers with the exception being in overall yards. Or Coker, who many consider to be a seasoned back-up with more game-time experience.

I'm sorry gentlemen you can be unhappy with my assessment, as cold as it may seem..but Coker is not showing the skills YET to be a starter nor does he bring anything to the table that Sims doesn't. People speak of his great pocket elusiveness, yet he had 5 sacks last year to Sims' 0....

I have faith in Saban and Kiffin to iron out the QB situation, and I do relish the competition that will ensue to see the cream rise to the top. However, I will not be bandied into believing Coker is the "answer" to our QB problems, until he walks out next year the starter. Until that point, he's statistically behind Blake Sims, who at this point would be my front runner.

No you can use stats all you want but it means jack... And who said Coker was more seasoned? You just made that up.

No he hasnt shown the skills to be a starter YET, he hasnt had much of a chance to. Neither has Sims.

I like Blake Sims and I really hope he is able to continue to improve because he brings a dynamic to the offense we've never had before, but to say that you cant see anything that he brings to the table that Blake doesnt is pretty incredible to me. Even with the limited film we can see on them if you can't see his touch and arm strength are VASTLY superior to Blake's then you are blind. Just like Blake's speed and mobility is vastly superior to Coker's.

You're trying to act like everyone thinks he's going to come in and become AJ McCarron 2.0 and lead us to an undefeated season blowing everyone out and win the Heisman. No, there has been considerable buzz been made about him and his arm, mostly by FSU ppl themselves during BCS media days, so people are excited to see what he can do. Just like Im excited to see what Blake can do and all the other QBs.

The front runner without doing anything? That makes sense. It says a lot about your front runner when Saban is recruiting Coker.

I'm not unhappy with your assessment I just think your wrong.

I dont think thats fair either, any other year replacing any other QB I have no doubt Saban would be going after a QB like that regardless. Is a position of need and adding more competition is def. not a bad thing.
