As I understand it he'd (Coker) have to have been issued a release from Florida State for him to be "recruitable."

Does not require a release from the school. A player that is graduating can be recruited. Here is a quote from Steve Fisher of SDSU.

"Even though we've benefited from it with Garrett Green from LSU who came as a fifth-year graduate and now Josh Davis from Tulane, I don't think that the transfer/immediate eligibility of kids that graduate is a good rule," Fisher said.
Fisher said that before he started recruiting Davis, he called Tulane's coach to give him a heads up.
"I said, 'We're going to try to recruit Josh Davis. I feel badly. I wish he would stay with you. But is he leaving for sure? If he's leaving, I want you to know we're going to try to recruit him.' He was appreciative of that fact," Fisher said. "It's not a good rule."

Alabama coach Nick Saban has in-home visit with Jacob Coker

St. Paul's coach Steve Mask said Coker family could foresee an official visit in the "near future."

Alabama coach Nick Saban visited the home of former St. Paul's and Florida State quarterback Jacob Coker on Tuesday afternoon, St. Paul's head coach Steve Mask said Wednesday.
Mask told AL.com the Coker family said they could foresee an official visit to the university in the "near future."

Coker, a redshirt sophomore, has been officially released from his scholarship, Mask said, and is on target to graduate in May. If he does, he would be eligible to play two years at Alabama, beginning this fall.

Mask was the Saints' defensive coordinator in Coker's final two years at St. Paul's in 2010 and 2011.

Saban, who visited the South team's practice for the Reese's Senior Bowl on Tuesday, declined to comment on Coker, saying he could not talk about recruitable student-athletes.

"We can't talk about anybody that we might be recruiting," Saban said.

Rumors have pegged Coker joining the competition to replace another former St. Paul's star, AJ McCarron, since earlier this fall.

Why is everybody so high on this kid? He was not highly rated coming out of high school and hasn't shown anything other than practices. Has he developed that much?

He was a 3* star QB but according to all his coaches he has a MASSIVE arm and supposedly it took Winston all the way into he fall to beat him out for the QB job this year... Reason to be optimistic.

QB coach at FSU:

"I've never had anybody with his size who throws it as well as he does," said FSU QB coach Randy Sanders who's been around big-time programs since his days as a Tennessee player in the mid-80s with the Vols star-crossed quarterback Tony Robinson. "Jake has a really quick release with tremendous arm strength. Rarely does it not spiral or not go where he wants it to go."


Asked if Coker's arm is even better than Winston, the resident Heisman winner, Sanders paused for a few breaths before saying, "Coker's arm is kind of at a different level. Jameis has a very special arm, and this isn't any knock against Jameis, but Jake's probably the best I've seen in 25 years at throwing it."


Sanders raved even more about Coker's character than he did about his arm.


"A lot of times when you have a quarterback competition, the most valuable player isn't the guy who wins the job it's the guy who doesn't win the job because they have the ability to almost divide a team," Sanders sad. "Jake's done a great job of supporting Jameis and helping him in any way he can. That's part of what makes him a special player."

Sanders has seen a few QB's in his time. One happens to be one of only two QB's playing football right now in the NFL whose name isn't Russell Wilson.

From all the scouting stuff I read, I can copy and paste it from ESPNInsider if anybody wants to see is he had issues with accuracy and consistency at times, and he was behind the 8ball coming into high school because he played in a wing t offense in high school with not many straight drop backs.

And Winston is a special kind of player...

Winston was starting no matter who the other QB was. Winston is a great player, but he was starting because of how highly touted he was. He would've started as a true freshman, but they had Manuel.
