but Saban has given several players a second chance.
It's my suspicion @planomateo saying "OU might take one on the chin" with this has more to do with the video than it does the second chance opportunity.

The public's opinion took a dramatic shift when the video of Rice knocking his girlfriend out became public. Compare Rice to Greg Hardy. In my opinion, Rice's public perception is a lot worse than Hardy's and it's an easy conclusion that's because people saw the aftermath versus reading about what happened.

Giving someone a second chance based on "he said, she said" is a lot easier and given more leeway as opposed to video showing someone "knocking the F out" of a defenseless person. OU going to feel some serious heat for this.

It is a difficult line to draw. Some acts are so egregious that the school should sever the connection immediately. A one year suspension is a pretty heavy dose of punishment. I don't know if that was indeed enough in this situation. In an action that was adjudicated as a misdemeanor with community service by the city of Norman, to be devil's advocate here, it does feel like the young man has complied with the terms of his sentence. It isn't as if he just slipped away into the sunset as a certain 1st round draft pick QB did. The release of the video will certainly keep this in the news for a while.

From the description of the video, I would not give him a pass but she shoved and slapped him first, before he decked her. I would take that into account.

That was my feeling. They implied she was drinking, the interaction was brief, the physicality initiated by her. But, we don't know what was said during the interaction. In any case, it sounds as if both parties had an opportunity to walk away before and after the slap, which led to a punch.

Alcohol, pride, youth and hormones don't usually lead to the best decisions

I didn't think he would make it back. Was there video of the assault that he was involved with though? I making more of the comparison of video versus verbal testimony.
From my understanding, Pettway was not in on the assault, he just did nothing to stop it, which is why he was given a second chance and the others were not.

He was with the group, they had the victims and their injuries, and I believe one or more of them admitted their guilt.

Mixon is guilty, no doubt about that. It sounds like the victim has some blame too. I can understand pushing the girl away but not punching her. Too many unanswered questions that we'll never have the answers to.

What I meant was he was not one of the ones throwing punches, kicks, etc. He just stood by and watched, did nothing to stop it. That was my understanding about Pettway and why he was granted a second chance, after he went Juco for a year. The other two were the ones who actually did the assault. This was from the victims story, iirc.

I agree 100 percent that he had other options and a better man may have chosen them vs striking a female. However, as I have raised my own girls to understand, not everyone was brought up with that mentality.

If a girl strikes a man, she shouldn't be surprised in today's age that she might be struck back. I'm in no way endorsing it and acknowledge there are unknowns, but from the video description, she seems guilty of assault having pushed and struck him first. However, I disagree with you that he is "guilty" without doubt of anything other than retaliation against a female assault.

Could he have left, yes. Would the drunk girl have struck him again or escalated things even if he tried to leave, maybe. Does a man have a right to self-defense, yes.

He is obviously more powerful than her, but had a scrawny drunk guy pushed/slapped him, would we have the same conversation? Likely not.

He lost a year of football over it. Unless, something more comes to light, I agree he seems to have earned a second chance.

If we remember the words of Lil' John:
Don't start no shit, it won't be no shit

I always thought it was ironic that the University of Oklahoma stood behind Joe Mixon 6 months after enrolling in college for punching a girl (no matter what was said) but months later opted to take a different stance with a couple of idiots in a frat who were videoed making racial comments. Mixon should be thankful his incident happened prior to the Ray Rice incident...I suspect he'd be in a different circumstance had Ray Rice's issue happened first.

I'm not sure. Ray Rice and Mixon were completely different incidents and circumstances.

If my time line is right, the Mixon assault happened after the Rice incident but a few days before the video release.

Plus, OU took in DGB after his Mizzou dismissal that included a potential assault (although no charges filed) of a female and pushing her down stairs after forcing entry into an apartment, which happened after Ray Rice incident and again before the video release.

I'm not sure it would have changed anything had it happened after the video release

Different yes, but I'd be willing to bet that had Mixon's incident happened after Rice's, Mixon wouldn't be in Norman.

Ah, the DGB incident...another example. Mixon was a true freshman, he didn't have near the documented history as DGB did for being a dumbass.
