Gus Malzahn: Auburn defensive line could be 'one of the best, if not the best, in college football'

Gus Malzahn is raving about the depth of Auburn's defensive line.

The Auburn head coach believes the front four will not only lead the best defense in his tenure on the Plains, but contend to be the best in the country.

"Our defensive front has the chance to be one of the best, if not the best, in college football," Malzahn told SiriusXM's College Sports Nation on Thursday. "The quality of depth really stands out to me too. We've had some strong defensive lines since I've been here but as far as depth goes, quality depth.

"We have some freshmen that can really play too. They're going to have to earn it out there but they're extremely talented."

Auburn returns six defensive linemen who were on the two-deep last season, including three starters in Carl Lawson, Montravius Adams and Dontavius Russell. However, the Tigers ranked 81st nationally in run defense and had just 19 sacks (No. 104 nationally) last season, with players responsible for more 10 sacks no longer on the roster.

Adams will likely be the team's best run stopper, as analysis by ProFootballFocusgraded him best on the roster last season with 20 stops against the run.

Seems to me like he is simply blowing hot air. He probably is trying to get his hopes up, the team motivated, the fans excited and the opponents worried. I say action speaks louder than words. This will all be decided on the field.

Blowing hot air!! Stats from last season:
104th in sacks
81st against the run
63rd in passing yards allowed
31st pass efficiency defense (not too bad)
71st overall

Now Gus, tell us again how they are the best in the nation!!! You might have depth, but your ENTIRE coaching staff has done a piss poor job when it comes to developing talent!!!

Or, could it be?

The information we're getting about JF3's passing suggests that he's not playable as a passer. A calamity.

I haven't really looked at Auburn this year. The Auburn and TAMU game is the 3rd game of the season, this could be when the shit really hits the fan for either Malzahn or Sumlin. I'd rather it be Malzahn and let Sumlin simmer for another year (he'll be gone soon enough).

In 2013, Auburn overachieved big time thanks to some downfield offensive lineman, a sturdy offensive line, and several games of really good luck. Thankfully they lost to FSU in the NC game (:D). Realistically, last year would have been Malzahn's last year, but the 2013 season got him some extra time.

/note/ TAMU with a QB/RB from Oklahoma, and the WR group they have could be interesting to watch...but I have to think the lack of Sherman recruited offensive lineman is going to kill them. Defensively, they have two DE's that are going to terrorize some tackles this year. Not sure what they're LB's and DB's will look like, they've been soft as hell the last few years letting teams run all over them. I kinda expect the same, with some Chavis improvements.
