Say what you will G-Mac like that lightning rod look. The article praises Greg for being "objective" in that he was obviously willing to step out on a ledge and predict AJ's future in the NFL. Based on current comparisons, it doesn't sound flattering. So if I criticize a teammate or particular player of a team I played for that is a guarantee that it's not personal, it's merely objective? I'll have to look that one up in the dictionary.

Greg McElroy compares former teammate, NFL free agent A.J. McCarron to Brock Osweiler and Mike Glennon

He didn't criticize AJ, though. He pointed out a fact (that Cincinnati's offense that year was LOADED). I would say his take on is very objective, considering the two are friends. I dont agree with his assessment at all in regards to comparing him to Ossweiler or Glennon, other than they were backups that were traded to become starters. I dont think their skill sets are the same. McCarron isn't going to break off a 70-yard run anytime soon but he's also not a sitting duck in the pocket like Ossweiler was. He's also much more accurate than both Glennon and Ossweiler and has a stronger arm than Glennon. I would also say he's much more poised than both of them.

Would you say that either Glennon or Osweiler's career has been anything more than mediocre in the NFL? If G-Mac's comparison doesn't hold water, I don't see how that wasn't a criticism of AJ's talent and NFL future.

He didn't compare AJ to the others. He just used the others as a "warning" for other teams who may be thinking about signing a backup to be their starting QB. It cost a fortune to sign Osweiller and Glennon only to see them fail miserably. He didn't say it wouldn't work, only that teams need to think about it. He hopes that AJ signs a big contract.

McElroy had to say when asked if he thought McCarron would be a starter in the NFL.

ā€œA.J.’s a friend, so, I’ve known him a long time and I’m obviously rooting for him to become a starter but if I have to put my analyst cap on I have to ask the question what’s the difference between A.J., Brock Osweiler and Mike Glennon? I have my questions there,ā€ McElroy said on the air.

ā€œI hope A.J. gets paid a ton of money, and I hope he gets a chance to start, but if I’m a GM, I have my doubts and concerns that he won’t be like the other guys.ā€

How is he not making a direct comparison of the other two QBs, physically?

If Greg was only talking about money, we get it. He may very well get Glennon money after his 18 NFL starts. But AJ has had only 4 NFL starts and even that would be a stretch in comparison. Greg was talking about AJ's talent.

And.....the team a QB plays for is much of the success....
Put Tom Brady on the Browns....wouldnt last the year...
So...its moot in his comparison....means nothing....
AJ is a quality player....and will be a benefit to any...thats any...team he goes to...
But ....he wont be a success at any place namedBrowns,Jets, chargers, bills, etc..
A mid level team....could happen

Don’t know why Greg would through shade on A.J. To not get a shot , when even Greg got a shot .

Hell , A.J. Had a playoff game won if not for the Jeremy hill fumble and the defensive melt down . So Greg should try not to burn bridges just to try and get some air time .. JMHO

The point is, how do you compare backups that don't play before giving them a truck full of money? Is a team ready to give a truckload of money to somebody that has hardly played? Is that smart? I think all Bama fans hope that AJ gets $$$$$$$$$$, but if you seriously look at the history of signing backups as your starting QB, it hasn't worked out well for teams that have.

Agreed. Last time I checked Ozzy and Glennon got PAAAAIIIIID.

Both had some type of success to get a contract. Just didn't turn into above average NFL QB's... Which BTW, is a damn hard thing to do.

So McElroy decides to ere on the side of being a flop? Your buddy, your teammate, your friend? Most QBs don't make it because at that level the talent is primarily in the head. Great arms come and go, it's the ones who demonstrate an IQ for the position that make it big in the NFL. If G-Mac is genuinely pulling for AJ, as he says, and hopes he get's the money, as he says, why project him as a bust before he knows? Why stick him with the also-rans when he hadn't demonstrated his acumen for the game yet?

Since when has McElroy had an obligation to share his insight into the NFL? He's a college commentator exclusively and most of his SEC and college drivel is what he's getting paid for. I'm not aware that he goes around taking shots at other NFL QBs, are you? So why this hit and run? Bush league move by a bush league talking head.

I am hopeful AJ gets paid and finds some success going forward. Cincy is a pathetic organization and so is Cleveland. The Arizona might be a great landing spot for AJ. He needs to land on a team that has some potential or do you just take the deal that gets you the most money at this point?

JMHO but I think Greg was heading in the right direction with his comments but then got derailed and didn't complete the trip. I think that if he had mentioned Aaron Rodgers backing up Favre and then getting paid or even Tom Brady behind Drew Bledsoe along with Osweiler and Glennon, then people wouldn't be so rustled. Those are 2 instances where the backups took over and had success for sure.

Well....actually dont most all outstanding QBs spend a lot of time as backup? (I don't know one way or other....) ........
But QBs you mentioned...look at teams....Green bay....NE...
QB skills part of it...mental edge as @TUSKstuff mentioned....and the organization...
I just hope AJ hits on good franchise....
