Georgia's SEC West matchups tabbed as potential marquee games

  1. Full coverage

When it comes to talking, projecting, and analyzing, there really is no offseason in College Football. We talk about it year round and the discussion ranges from specific players to position groups -- from schedule nuances to rivalry breakdowns. The masses simply can't get enough of College Football.

That's why SBNation recently did a rundown of their top College Football matchups in week-by-week fashion. It started at week one and finished with week 15 where it named its top game in each and even did a projection of the SEC Championship game.

Georgia appears as the top choice twice during the breakdown, it makes the runner-up slot once and there's one seemingly glaring omission.

We'll start with the two UGA games SBNation projects as the week's top matchup and it starts with The Deep South's Oldest Rivlary in Week 11. Georgia and Auburn will go toe-to-toe in Athens where the Bulldogs pulled off an upset of the Tigers in 2016. Auburn entered the game as the nation's No. 9 team and with an outside shot at the College Football playoff but the Bulldogs, who had already lost four games coming in, had different plans.

In a game that did a fine job of characterizing this rivalry, Georgia allowed a touchdown on the opening drive and then basically nothing after that. It got a pick-six from Maurice Smith and a pair of field goals from Rodrigo Blankenship to win 13-7.

Auburn got some revenge last season when Georgia came in as the No. 1 team in the country. Kerryon Johnson and company embarrassed Georgia with a 40-17 win and knocked the Bulldogs off their pedestal. The two teams had a rematch in the SEC title game, which essentially functioned as a College Football Playoff play-in game. Georgia got the better of that one with a 28-7 win.

The Tigers haven't beaten UGA in Athens since 2005 and the Bulldogs have won 10 of the last 13 games between the two teams.

SBNation also has a UGA vs. Alabama matchup predicted for the SEC Championship game and has that tabbed as its game of Week 14. That one is pretty self-explanatory because if it goes down that way, it could once again mean the winner moves on to play for a shot at the whole enchilada.

UGA vs. LSU in Week 11 also comes up in the "Also" category for that week. SBNation chooses Washington at Oregon for its top game that week but a strong start (meaning a win over Auburn) could vault LSU up the rankings early in the season.

As for the omission, where is UGA vs. South Carolina in Week 2? Clemson vs. Texas A&M gets the not as the top game that week and rightfully so, but the SEC East showdown between the Bulldogs and Gamecocks (not to mention good friends Kirby Smart and Will Muschamp going head to head) should be considered in the same breath as USC at Stanford, UCLA at Oklahoma and Penn State at Pitt.
