🏈 Georgia Southern FAQ

Hello All!

Just wanted to re-welcome myself to the Forum since Georgia Southern and Bama are finally paired up to play each other. Since i'm here I thought I'd post some info about my beloved school before our first ever (I believe) meeting.

First, we are not the GSU from Atlanta, Georgia State, that Bama played last season, they are startups with a losing record and while they are busy losing to D-II schools and NAIA schools we just finished our regular FCS season with a 9-1 record and top 5 ranking (and a vote in the AP Poll for BAMA's subdivision)

Georgia Southern has a very proud fanbase, we average a national championship every five years and we have the third highest winning percentage in D-I behind only Michigan and Notre Dame http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_winningest_college_football_teams

W
e run a version of Georgia Tech's triple option offense, Paul Johnson is a former coach at Georgia Southern, and we also run a 4-3 Defense. We are built very similar to Alabama, we are a run first, strong defense team and i'm very interested to see how we match up with Alabama's offense.

GSU has never upset an FBS team even though we have come close a few times. In the 80's we were up on Auburn at half and let it slip away and also up on Florida State in the 4th quarter and managed to mail that one in too. Last year we lost to Navy by 6 and a decade ago time ran out as we were driving for the win against Oregon State.

We are similar to Alabama in more ways than our general coaching philosophy too. We have similar uniforms which reflect our humble beginnings... our helmet stripe was "training tape" because we could not afford to put the stripes on the helmets.

Our school is located in Statesboro, GA (college town one hour from the beach) and we have 20,000 students. We play in the Southern Conference with the likes of Samford and Appalachian State.

I'm really excited to see Trent Richardson go up against our Defense, we also have a #3 that we are very proud of, Adrian Peterson. Not the Oklahoma/Vikings one but rather the GSU/Bears running back. He rushed for 9,000+ Yards and 111 touchdowns in 4 years as Southern going to three straight championships and winning two.

I wish the Crimson Tide well this weekend and can't wait to see the game!

Also,

Guys to watch for on our team would be..

1 (#45) Adrian Mora, our Kicker who has the NCAA record for consecutive XP completions
2 (#66) Brent Russell, our best player who is a Junior and will be at the next level in two years, he is a monster on our D-Line.
3 (#14) Jaybo Shaw, QB Transfer from Georgia Tech. He is our least athletic quarterback but has the best "field smarts" and does a great job avoiding mistakes.
4 (#34) Laron Scott, the fastest player on our team, great kickoff return man, may also play in the NFL next season with Adrian Mora, he's pretty good at coverage and will probably be matched up with Maze for the game.

Thanks for the warm welcome, I know we will never be on Bama's level but games like these let us gauge where we are on a national scale and unless we go FBS this is our only barometer as to the actual level we are playing on. If we can keep the score within 30 points and score at least 7 then I'll be happy.

Edit: we sometimes get pretty high in the sagrin rankings but this is a real on the field test not some computer guessing.

Very familiar with Georgia Southern. I used to have a drinking buddy that played during two of their title runs. I remember one night in a bar in Atlanta a guy noticed his big National Championship ring and asked him about it. When he responded it was the two time NC ring the guy asked what school. And when he said Georgia Southern the guy laughed him off as it not being real football. My buddy responded no, this is for the true national champions, because we win it on the field through a playoff and not in some poll.

*by the way this predates the BCS. Man I'm old. LOL

That aside I hope that by adding Mizzou and Texas A&M to the mix we can be rid of these match ups with the lower divisions. The NFL does not invite an NCAA team to play so why does the FBS invite FCS schools to play. I've never understood it. Plus I hate to see games like the App State upset of Michigan as much as I loved it. LOL
