🏈 Geno Smith Has Come Home

Former Alabama DB Matias-Smith back with team as analyst

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Former Alabama defensive back Geno Matias-Smith is back at his alma mater and will serve an off-field role this fall, BamaOnLine has confirmed. Aaron Suttles of The Tuscaloosa News was first to report Matias-Smith's new role.

Matias-Smith was at the Crimson Tide's spring practice Saturday afternoon, surveying the new crop of defensive backs from the Hank Crisp Indoor Practice Facility's sideline. He will serve as an analyst or "intern-like" role in Tuscaloosa after a one-year absence.

The former four-star recruit from Atlanta was one of Alabama's starting safeties as a senior in 2015 after starting his four-year career as a cornerback. He joined the Washington Redskins' organization as an undrafted free agent following his college tenure.

Matias-Smith is one of a few former Crimson Tide players to accept off-field roles this offseason. Denzel Devall was promoted to director of player development last month, while fellow safety Nick Perry was added as a grad assistant at the start of the month.

Nick Saban also hired some other high-profile analysts in Chris Weinke and former Ole Miss offensive coordinator Dan Werner this offseason.

You have to put Geno Smith on the list of why second and third chances are given. He had himself a basement dug in Saban's doghouse after the 2nd DUI and looks like it's going to have a happy ending. With Kamara and Jones and Smith I started to appreciate why Richt was having so much difficulty with Georgia boys. Even Drake had to make a comeback. With Kamara learning life's lessons in Knoxville, that's 3 of 4 recruits who did pretty well.
