Nick Saban's Alabama defense is holding opponents to just 87.4 yards a game, which leads the SEC, while Gus Malzahn's Auburn defense has held teams to 118.2 yards a contest.

The question was simple: Will Auburn's Jarrett Stidham or Alabama's Jalen Hurts have to carry more of the offensive load for their teams Saturday during the Iron Bowl?

Former Auburn quarterback Gabe Gross, who joined me and Lee Shirvanian on Tuesday on "The Opening Kickoff" on WNSP-FM 105.5, said it was the Tide's Hurts.

"From Alabama's point of view, I think if Auburn chooses, they might be able to lock Alabama's running game down pretty good," Gross said. "Maybe not to the extent like they did against Georgia. I think Jalen Hurts will have more of the offense on him, kind of like he did against Mississippi State.

"Auburn's going to have more success running the ball than Alabama when you look at the depleted linebacker corps Alabama has."

Despite the injuries, the Crimson Tide is holding opponents to just 87.4 yards a game, which leads the SEC.

Auburn's no joke, either, holding opponents to 118.2 yards a contest, which ranks third in the league.

On Monday, Terrell Lewis (elbow) and Christian Miller (biceps) were not spotted during the media viewing of practice. Alabama coach Nick Saban said earlier in the day they are in the "functional" rehabilitation phase and haven't been medically cleared.

It was reported, citing sources, that Lewis and Miller could be readyfor Saturday's game against Auburn.

Gross, the hitting coach for the Auburn baseball team, was complimentary of both Stidham and Hurts

"Jarrett Stidham has come leaps and bounds, but Chip Lindsay has come leaps and bounds on how to use Jarrett Stidham," Gross explained.

"Over the last month-plus, they have maximized his strengths and stayed away from his weaknesses."

Gross said he feels like Auburn will limit what Alabama, which rushes for 270 yards a game, does on the ground.

"But that's what makes Alabama a little scarier," he said. "I don't think there's a better receiver in the league that Calvin Ridley. He's a special, special player. You take the run-pass abilities of Hurts and big-play ability of Ridley and you have something special."

At the end of the day, Gross likes Auburn to win the game in a close one.

Uhhh ...it's a prediction, not saying it's something written in stone. I guess if I don't spew the Kool-aid, then I shouldn't post. I'm sure if I had said the opposite would happen, and I thought that we would win 31-17, then you'd have no comment or problem with that.

1. Auburn will not be able to block nearly 5 yards downfield on pass plays like in the past. Referees have tightened up on that.
2. Auburn does not have the receiving corps Bama does.
3. Auburn will have success running the ball like MSU did. But if you look at the stats from the MSU game, Bama held MSU to less yards per carry than Auburn did.
4. Auburn will be as physical or more than MSU at the LOS than MSU.
5. Bama needs to take their time on drives like MSU did to Bama. Auburn's RB cannot have success watching from the sidelines. Bama scored too quickly early in the MSU game and took their time later in the game.
6. Bama's secondary needs to step up. Can't let big plays happen.
7. The differences this year for Bama is Hurts, a healthy Scarborough, deep at RB, and Minkah if he is healthy.
8. Defensive line may have to play more into the gaps to help the LBs.
9. I can see Auburn taking the "rat poison" and looking ahead to UGA. I don't see Bama looking at anything but the next play until the clock hits zero.

I don't see Auburn blowing us out like they did UGA, but I could see us blowing them out.

Sounds pretty accurate to me. Hate to say it, but I don't like how we match up with the Barn. Too many injuries - they'll have better line play and win.
31-17

You see, I look at both teams and see how Bama matches up better with Auburn than they did Mississippi State.

Who is Gabe Gross

Former MLB player :naughtydevil:

Who also played for Auburn's baseball team. His father was a center for AU in football.

It's akin to a guy like Harrison Jones to pick Bama to win: "too much Bama" in him." In this case, "too much Auburn" in Gabe.

Spew the kool-aid? You haven't bothered to shower us with your perspective throughout the season, good or bad, and now you sound like Jim Cantore predicting landfall for a category 5 hurricane. Stick around, maybe we can build you a backbone.

Interesting.....so many pick AU....based on......the UGA game...period...
Like I said.....UGA...terrible game plan...terrible adjustments...terrible execution...terrible penalties....terrible luck ie fumbles....
If Bama has same...outcome same....
After 11 games...i cant see Bama having terrible of any of these...
JH has been to Baton Rogue, NC game, here there everywhere...can handle atmosphere
AU may win...thats why they play....but......it is Bama that is being under appreciated...
Not good to do that to a NS team

If Bama has same...outcome same....(Sorry I don't think we will see this, UGA gave up!)

:agree:

So, a* may outdo Bama in the running game? OK, that's very possible. It's also very possible that Bama with drown them with the passing game. The only stat I'm concerned with is the scoring game. I'll cede have fewer running yards than the barn, as long as Bama lights them up in the air.

Roll Tide, ROLL!
