šŸˆ G5 teams on Alabama's 12 game regular schedule. What are the pro's and con's for continuing to schedule G5 teams?

Just a few off the top of my head.

Pro's
Usually a win and mostly an easy win (from bama's perspective).
Get to rest the starters and get to play lots of players.
Gives players that may be hurt a time to heal up and rest their bodies.
People get access to tickets that normally would not be able to do so.
Gives the G5 teams and programs great exposure.

Con's
Expected to win so if you do not the crap hits the fan.
Season ticket holders have to sit through less quality games.
Injuries are part of the game but if somethone does get hurt in these games it feels like it was unnecessary.
Less national interest unless of course you lose.

My take is 50+ is ok with it but maybe one less than is scheduled today.

Left footprints in a-many places....not only made the trek...made it back .....
Whatever all that means
Okay.

I've always maintained I want a nine game conference schedule, one good out of conference game, and two G5 type games.

Here's your pro to that scenario.

Those two G5 games allow roughly two dozen players see the field in a game who never had, in Bryant Denny. Part of that group comes for those over the 85; walk-ons.

For as much as those guys put into the program each season having a couple of "cupcakes" on the schedule allows them their moment in the sun. Remove those games and what do they have left?

I think you hit it solidly.....1 or 2 less
But some quality scheduling efforts later years
With Nick...should be playing P5 teams...

Right...One is kinda ok...
I always used that game to take kids/grankids....
Cheap cheap tickets

Is this correctly translated?

"It's better not to schedule games against G5 teams because there's a chance the team might lose and crap will hit the fan."
Less national interest unless of course you lose.
I see the point and call: half of the games Alabama plays now aren't of national interest.

Compare that to Notre Dame who has a national broadcast each week—on 'free' TV. Out of the five ACC opponents, only one has a national draw: Florida State. Out of their other games there are five that might draw a national interest:

UNC,
USC,
Cincinnati,
Wisconsin,
and Navy.

There are three of those five which may not draw much at all.

Alabama should never schedule an FCS team IMO. I get the economic aspect of it for the FCS schools (and the fact that those types of games are the only games a big portion of the fan base can ever afford to go to) but it always ends up in a 3/4 full stadium (with half of them leaving at halftime) and a game that is over in five minutes. I would prefer an all Power-5 schedule, personally, but I'm also good with them scheduling in-state G5 teams like Troy, South Alabama and UAB. Hell, I'd even walk back the FCS complaint to throw Alabama State or Jax State a bone every now and then.

Ok....i buy that....

Personally....I would prefer a 10 game SEC schedule...1 outta conference P5...1 G5
But 9/1/2 is ok...
Maybe...we think for different reasons...

I think a lot in terms of the season ticket home schedule value...
Butts in seats....is important ...full stadium...awesome environment...exciting venue...people staying through 4 quarters...Rammer Jammer at end....
But your thoughts are spot on too...

"Y'all don't remember the Georgia Southern game, do you? I don't think we had a guy on that field that didn't play in the NFL and about four or five of them were first-round draft picks, and I think that team won a national championship but I'm not sure.

And they ran through our ass like shit through a tin horn, man, and we could not stop them. We could not stop them. Could not stop them."

I feel like we should move to a 10 game conference schedule with 16 teams. I know there are ways to hash out your top 2 teams, but I think it would be easier to determine, especially if the do the 4 team "pods" concept we have seen floated.

Lot of these season holders will sell those tickets to other. Letting them watch Bama for maybe the first time.

Damn Josh...me and you agree!!!!!!!!!! 99.9%.....wow...
Next thing you know-me and @TerryP will agree...
Unbelievable
...lol...

Alabama already plays in a conference which has the most ranked teams when compared to other conferences.

A ten game conference schedule would mean playing more conference games than other conferences all the while having more ranked teams within the conference.

With eight we're already seeing teams beaten up by the end of the season due to the talent on hand within the SEC. I'm not a fan of making a tougher situation as it stands now worse down the road.

I dont get that...
Every team in conference isnt a powerhouse team...
Look at 2022.... @home is 3 G5,... vandy and msu and AU...all probably un ranked teams....plus Tx AnM....
LSU, MS, Arkansas, TN away.... plus Texas ( all maybe i know)
Not a very daunting schedule...by any stretch....good games though
Its making it more competitive...to expand schedule...
Future looks good for that......
Even to 9/1/2

IMO, its about $$$$ bc the G5 teams will come to Bama and play. If Bama schedules all P5 teams, there will have to be 6 home and 6 away games which equals lost revenue. Personally, I agree with Josh that if we play G5 schools, we should play the teams in our state. I have a huge dislike for ohio state but at least they play one G5 team from the state in the Shoe. I have no problem with Bama putting a home state school in T'Town every year.

You make a good point, because the last ten years Alabama has made really good SEC schools look like Division II schools. Saban has beaten the fun out of the Alabama-Arkansas', Alabama-Mississippi State's, Alabama-Tennessee's. That being said, looking at it from any other team's perspective, an all Power 5 schedule would be terrific. Once Saban leaves, who knows what is going to happen, but I can tell you, it'll be a downward move, which will make a lot of these games more fun to watch going forward, so then an all Power 5 schedule would look a lot better. Alabama-Tennessee, Alabama-South Carolina, Alabama-Arkansas won't be like Alabama-Mercer, Alabama-New Mexico State, Alabama-Western Carolina.

I feel as though we will be at 4 super conferences with 16 teams in the next 3 years......If that happens, then I think all 4 conferences need to play 10 conference games or only play from the power 4 conferences for the other 3 games.

Either way, I get what you're saying. But as mentioned by others. Alabama will not be able to dominate in the fashion we have done the last 15 years. And even so, while other teams are "ranked" within the conference.......each year we really only have (on average) 4 teams or so that are considered upper echelon. Bama/UGA with a rotation of UF/LSU/aTm/Auburn for the other 2 upper tier. Every thing else is a fall off after that.

Yep see my con in our case we did not lose but it felt like we did:).

@TerryP you read this correctly. Sounds weird when I read it back lol. It is a con right or wrong.

BTW I still can't get my quotes to happen correctly so I cut and pasted your reply. My post reply does work.
