🏈 Fowler could see role change

If asked who the most versatile player on Alabama’s offense is, a popular answer would probably be Jalston Fowler.

He can seal the edge, be a lead blocker up the middle, help out in pass protection, carry the ball when needed and of course catch his signature play-action touchdowns near the goal line. (Last season he had seven catches for 15 yards. And five touchdowns.)

But under new offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, Fowler may see his responsibilities change.

“My role will change a lot, because I have to learn what the receivers are doing, the H receivers, I have to learn what he’s doing, so it’s changing quite a bit,” Fowler said. “I’ll be playing a lot of H this year.”

Another big difference may be him being showcased as a fullback more.

Alabama hasn’t really had a fullback in the traditional sense under Saban. H-backs and tight ends have motioned into the backfield and almost played that role, but it has hardly been a regular occurrence.

Fowler’s skillset seems suited well for a fullback, which could be a new feature in Kiffin’s offense.

“I play the fullback a lot,” Fowler said. “That’s the type of offense that we run, a fullback-based offense, so I’m pretty much in there most, all of the time.”

And so far, he likes what he sees from the new offense.

“It helps everybody out, when you have learn what everyone else has to do on offense,” he said. “It’s pretty diverse, but if you learn it you’ll be better prepared to play in our offense,” he said. “We really have to learn what everybody’s doing. If you play X you have to know where the Z’s going because you might end up playing. He moves everyone around. He’s pretty much got in mind what he’s doing, what you’re doing.”
