šŸ“” Former NHL Star Adam Johnson, 29, Dead After ā€˜Freak Accident’ During Hockey Game | GRAPHIC FOOTAGE:

Almost posted this earlier to see the thoughts on it... Really sad situation. Without knowing a ton on the backstory, I strongly lean towards charges being filed. Keeps being labeled an accident, but on the surface, certainly looks intentional (I doubt dude was trying to slice his carotid artery, but he sure seemed to be trying to send a harmful message with the his skate, blade first. With it being overseas though, not real sure how the charges would work/apply.

@Brandon Van de Graaff I ran across the story earlier today and have been weighing the same thoughts. If it were here, I'd think voluntary manslaughter?

If a guy was hit with a bat during a game and he died?

If a guy gets stabbed in a fight, dies, but the "stabber" didn't mean to kill him; just hurt him and send a message?

Being a pretty big hockey fan myself, that's textbook why the NHL cracks down on people leaving their feet in a hit. If your feet are planted, much less likely to have something like that happen. That's a bush league collision.

EDIT: Just saw this

Seems some leagues may be moving towards mandatory neck protection in the future. I wouldn't be opposed to it, as the article says, they're not that much in the way as they used to be and can literally save a life.

It looks like he made intentional contact with the way he threw his leg up. I'd think a "missed" body check would see him heading into him shoulder first.

Yeah. Not sure if it’s true, but I saw some folks say that dude that did it is known for dirty play and is a penalty magnet. I’d imagine something led up to that moment, assuming it was an intentional act with kicking his leg out.

Name a team in the NHL and there's one of those guys on every one, they used to call them goons. Now they call them enforcers, designed to take the penalties, deliver big hits on other big men to avoid your star players getting all the attention from the other team's enforcers.

That being said, the swinging of the foot makes no sense with the collision that was made. Pretty sure he left his feet, flailed his body around in an attempt to hurt someone.

I'm unsure if that justifies bringing him up on charges or not, maybe it will be a catalyst to remove this type of play from hockey in general. I love the physicality of the game, but the need to have a guy on the team to beat-up another team is kind of detracting from the skill on display at times.

Yeah, I almost labeled him a goon, but wasn't sure that was fair since I really don't know for sure if all that stuff I read was accurate.

Could’ve been intentional, but I don’t know. This is the fourth one of these I’ve seen, a dude last year during the NHL playoffs took a skate to his face just below his eye, a goalie for the Buffalo Sabres is probably the most widely known, had his throat slit by a skate 25-ish years ago and miraculously survived.

The neck protectors aren’t new at all, but players haven’t worn them, my now 18 yr old son wore one when he was in hockey when he was 5.

Such a tragic and sad deal.

It's because the neck protectors before were the size of a facemask on a football helmet. Now they fit inside of a sleeved scarf and don't cause any issues with turning your head or anything.
