Alabama has landed a commitment from Wenonah defensive lineman Quinnen Williams.
The 6-foot-4, 265-pounder picked the Crimson Tide over fellow finalists Auburn and Mississippi State Tuesday morning at his school.

"They have always been a top choice of mine," Williams told AL.com last week. "I like their tradition and winning ways. They're always in the running to compete for a championship. Their athletic department is second to none and they have a great academic program as far as my major (education) goes. I've developed a great relationship with the coaches -- Coach (Mario) Crisobal, Coach (Bo) Davis and Nick Saban."
Williams was committed to Auburn for more than four months before reopening his recruitment earlier this month.

"When I committed to Auburn I kind of shut down from everyone to clear my mind and make sure I was doing the right thing," he said.

Williams is ranked as a three-star prospect and the No. 33 defensive tackle in the 247Sports Composite. He is the fourth defensive lineman to join Alabama's 2016 recruiting class, joining Raekwon Davis, Kendell Jones and Khalid Kareem.

The commitment

The University of Alabama received a commitment from Quinnen Williams, three-star defensive tackle from Wenonah High School in Birmingham, Ala., on Tuesday morning. The former AU commitment is No.17 for the Crimson Tide's 2016 recruiting class.

His father, Quincy Williams, stated shortly after his commitment to AU, "He's always been an Auburn fan growing up. The majority of his passwords on his computer and Twitter account have something to do with Auburn. He's just living out his childhood dream now."

Alabama opted to wait until the spring before extending an offer to Williams. He visited Tuscaloosa a few times before returning to Alabama's camp for four days in early June. He decided to re-open his recruitment after returning home from the Tide's camp. Many believed Alabama was in the driver's seat. It was a little bit of a surprise not to see him commit to Alabama right away. A few weeks later and he's the latest to join the commitment roster.

Williams was recruited by Alabama offensive line coach Mario Cristobal. He also built a very good relationship with defensive line coach Bo Davis throughout his recruitment.

The player

Williams is a big-bodied lineman with a lot of upside. He had 85 tackles in 2014, 15 sacks and five forced fumbles. The 6-foot-4, 265-pound prospect is an aggressive lineman who plays with great leverage. He is quick off the ball and does a great job of chasing down ball carriers.

Williams has excellent size, athleticism and quickness off the ball. He must continue to improve his strength, work on his hands and develop his body. His long term potential is high especially working on the defensive line with Coach Bo Davis.

The numbers

The numbers are growing tight especially on the defensive front with the addition of Williams. He was recruited as a defensive end. Alabama has interior commitments from Kendell Jones, Rivals100 defensive tackle from Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas and Raekwon Davis, three-star defensive tackle from Meridian High School in Miss. They also have a commitment from Khalid Kareem, four-star defensive end from Harrison High School in Farmington Hills, Mich. Kareem is recruited to play 'jack' linebacker or defensive end.

Alabama will still target a few other defensive ends including Marlon Davidson, five-star defensive end from Greenville High School in Ala., Jeffery Simmons, three-star from Noxubee County High School in Macon, Miss., and Xavier Kelly, four-star from East High School in Wichita, Kansas. These prospects remain high priority targets for Alabama. Kelly is recruited more as a outside linebacker/'jack' linebacker.

Alabama will also continue recruiting Benito Jones, four-star defensive tackle from Wayne County High School in Waynesboro, Miss., and Kobe Jones, three-star defensive tackle from Starkville High School in Miss.

Interior prospects who remain major targets include Rashan Gary, five-star defensive tackle from Catholic High School in Paramus, N.J., Michail Carter, four-star defensive tackle from Jackson High School in Ga., and Rashard Lawrence, four-star defensive tackle from Neville High School in Monroe, La.

Alabama might have a high number of defensive line commitments come signing day in February. A few are recruited for different positions like Kareem who is recruited at 'jack' linebacker or possibly Xavier Kelly who is recruited as an outside linebacker.

Quinnen Williams, three-star defensive tackle from Wenonah High School in Birmingham, Ala., committed to the University of Alabama on Tuesday morning. The former Auburn commitment becomes commitment No.17 in the Crimson Tide's 2016 class.

Williams is the fourth defensive line commitment in Alabama's class joining Kendell Jones, Rivals100 defensive tackle from Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas, Khalid Kareem, four-star defensive end from Harrison High School in Farmington Hills, Mich., and Raekwon Davis, three-star defensive tackle from Meridian High School in Miss. Alabama is adding plenty of size to the defensive front which is expected to lose several key contributors after the 2015 season to graduation and early entry to the NFL.

"I committed to Alabama because Alabama is a great school," said Williams. "They have a great academic and great athletic program. It's the place where I feel like I can develop my game in the next four years, and will help me become a better man in life.

"When I first committed to Auburn I committed as a fan instead of looking at it as a student-athlete. I grew up a diehard Auburn fan. Auburn was my dream offer. When I got the offer I decided to go ahead and commit. I really didn't look at it from a student-athlete standpoint.

"Alabama was really the best fit for me. They can help develop as a player and as a man. I just committed too quick. I decided to re-open my recruitment and take a look at everything."

Williams does not plan on second guessing his commitment to the Crimson Tide.

"I am done with the recruiting process," he said. "I am not going on any more college visits. I am very relieved with my decision. I just want to focus on my senior season, build my body up and get ready to go to Alabama.

"I knew I was going to Alabama after I went down there for the camp. I knew it's where I wanted to be. I know they can help me be great in life, in the classroom and in the neighborhood."

The in-state prospect developed a great bond with ace recruiter Mario Cristobal and defensive line coach Bo Davis throughout the recruiting process.

"I called Coach Cristobal and told him about my decision last night," said Williams. "He was very excited. He was the one who recruited me. He helped me understand the recruiting process. He came down here and saw me. He talked to me about everything.

"I really love Coach Bo Davis. He is a great guy. Coach Crisotbal is very humble. Coach Saban is real down to earth and humble. He pushes kids to work hard on the football field, in the classroom and in life."

The 6-foot-4, 265-pound lineman accounted for 85 tackles in 2014, 15 sacks and five forced fumbles. He is ranked the No.39 defensive tackle in the country by Rivals.com.

"My strengths as a player are my hands and the mental part of the game," he said. "I want to get faster. It's something i am really working on this off-season.

"I was recruited to play defensive end. I feel like I fit in really well at Alabama. They have a very good background with defensive ends. They have Da'Shawn Hand there now. I am really cool with him."
