You called that one all the way Big_Fan.
It really wasn't that hard. JSU is not a bad team, they just had to overcome coaching. Had Crowe not pulled Blanchard in the first half, I think JSU would have won the game without OT.
Ole Miss was overlooking JSU, from their coaches to their players, to the sports writers and even fans. I read the
Ole Miss rivals site article "The Edge" which does an abbreviated unit comparison like I do with the Trickle Down, and they didn't do any real research - what little they got right, they looked at through homervision...
Examples:
JSU Secondary:
Led by All-America cornerback T.J. Heath, Jacksonville State is quick and athletic in the secondary. It's a good test for the inexperienced Ole Miss passing game. Heath has BCS-level talent, and the Jacksonville State secondary starts three juniors and one senior.
v/s
Ole Miss QB (written when Masoli was ineligible)
Ole Miss' passing attack is one of the keys to watch Saturday, with Nathan Stanley making his first start and Randall Mackey likely to get looks in certain formations. UM has wide receivers in new roles, and --barring an NCAA reversal -- Jeremiah Masoli won't be eligible.
They called this match-up even. Think about that...JSU starting ALL AMERICAN corner. All other match-ups they did were in Ole Miss' favor. The one that really got me was their look at JSU's ground game:
Jamal Young is a 175-pound scat back that will handle the majority of JSU's carries Saturday. He's a senior and will run behind senior fullback Alphonso Freeney, who has more than 20 starts. Darius Barksdale will play but isn't expected to have much of an impact.
One problem...JAMAL YOUNG WAS 3rd STRING. The Starter was (and has been forever) Calvin Middleton. Tig Barksdale was 2nd string.
It was obvious that the writer didn't take JSU seriously - at least not serious enough to do any research like READING THE PRESS GUIDE!
Then there was the Ole Miss fans...the stadium emptied at halftime when it was 31-10. How big of a difference would it have been in overtime if JSU would have been having to deal with an endzone full of rowdy Ole Miss fans? Instead, they had no problems hearing the snap count and getting plays off. The fans could have made a difference - but they didn't take JSU seriously.
I will make another prediction and hope I am wrong.
JSU, as talented as they are, will not do what Appy state did when they beat Michigan. Appy state won the D1AA NC that season after dropping 2 games (Wofford and Ga Southern) in the regular season.
With Crowe as HC, JSU will lose to a crappy team or two in the OVC (a crappy conference), and if they make the playoffs, they will get blown out by Montana or Delaware or someone like that.
I really hope JSU proves me wrong. They have an upgraded stadium that is probably among the nicest in D1AA and designs on moving to the FBS. That is probably a good idea - there is a lot more money to be had with a conference tie in and FBS schools being able to schedule you without losing a bowl counter. I just think they need to ditch Crowe and call Bower or Tommy or Terry Bowden...even Coach DuBose would be a step up.
