šŸˆ šŸ”„ Hot Seat 2025 / Coaching Carousel:

Okay, early signing period is December 3rd-5th. Today is October 12th. Franklin and other coaches got fired today. So Players who wants to enter into portal can do so for 3o day window period. So that runs out to November 12th, etc. You have recruits decommiting from Penn state and other schools. So Penn State is in bad shape already, and I wish they had waited until at least end of October... because Penn State last game is November 29th. So when is the good time to hire a coach? Especially if that coach is coaching somewhere else at that moment? This is one huge mess. Penn State is set to lose lot of players through the portal, it's a lose-lose situation. So I wish they had waited a bit...

They were going to lose a LOT more players via the portal if they waited to make a change after the season when semesters were done. Making a change now land locks most of them and at least forces them to wait until a new hire is made, and not bolt based on emotions or unknowns. I expect very few to leave, in terms of impact players. Sure, some 3rd stringers with 17 specials teams snaps on the season will probably bolt, but they would have anyway. It would be pretty shortsighted for a healthy, productive player to give up the rest of his season right now and just sit out. Also, if they hire a sitting HC, say around the first week of December, it triggers the portal window on his own roster, like it did with DeBoer... only this time, a portal window on his new won't be open to combat with since it will have expired during the season. So conceivably, like DeBoer, the new guy could bring some of his own pieces with him. But he also gets a chance to re-recruit his new roster without them having a good opportunity to leave until January (save any who might just withdraw after exams and the final game).

Watch PSU's recruiting class. How do you commit to a school when you don't know who the coach is going to be?

IF you wait until the season is over...isn't December's signing day the first week? 3rd, maybe, is when it starts?

They'll lose some recruits, but I don't think a signing class should ever outweigh a coaching change. The current staff/admin, if they care to, can get some to delay their signing until a new coach is in place. Or, worst case, they eat a turd of a signing class and just backfill it with portal pieces. I haven't seen who was committed to them, but with the direction of the program up until around noon today, I doubt many of the commits were feeling great about the future anyway. But like Bama, they'll get some kids who still commit to the school over anything else... which will be a portion of whatever kids from PA are committed to them currently.

I know you want to die on this hill. I don't think you're right.
Why would any coach accept a new job mid season? Can’t coach (installing your offense/defense without your coaches?) Can’t recruit (who are your position coaches?) Remaining assistants will be trying to boost their profile because most will be out of a job.

Candidate coaches can earn significant bonuses for the results of their team that makes them a candidate. I can see several coaches bolting before a bowl.

Not quite. Remember, new rules were passed recently that changed the format. The committee approved a new format which shortens that window to 15 days and begins five days after a new coach is hired or announced.

Here's where I question the timing of hires @OldPlayer If you wait until the season is over to announce a new hire the window starts at the announcement when your other schools are in a "pen to paper" mode.

If I'm not mistaken we've seen as many P4 jobs open this season as we saw last year? I am pretty sure it was less than six and we've got five open to date.

I remember last year's hot seat thread and it wasn't that active. A lot of that was understandable with the NIL being on the forefront of administrations' minds and the settlement hitting through Congress.

Now, a year later, I am seeing the opposite. PSU, UArk, UCLA, VaTech, and Okie State. If we look at the FBS all of those are in the top half for desirable jobs. And we're looking at Florida possibly opening? Sparty? UK? Wisconsin? Auburn?

Let's say you're coaching at USF and you get the UF offer. Is there harm in announcing the hire? If it's Lane and attention is split? Yes. If not?

You think there's any chance Jonathan Smith gets fired soon? Or will they let him ride it out? Just interesting to me because they're heading into a bye week(I think). And that UCLA loss was awful, got their teeth kicked in.

If fired without cause, Michigan State must continue covering Smith’s health insurance for three full months and pay him 85 percent of his remaining base salary and supplemental income for the rest of the contract term. That payment, known as ā€œliquidated damages,ā€ is made in equal monthly installments and includes all required tax withholdings. Smith would also receive any earned but unpaid performance bonuses. However, these payments depend on him signing a formal release and separation agreement prepared by the university.

I am not a contract lawyer but, by my math, MSU would owe Smith $31,556,250 if he is terminated before 2/1/26. That number drops to $25,415,000 after 2/1/26. The nearly $32M would be payable in 62 monthly payments of $508,972 from December 2025 through January 2031.

The contract also imposes a duty to mitigate - meaning Smith must make a genuine effort to find another comparable coaching job. Specifically, he’s required to ā€œactively seek and obtainā€ employment as either an NFL or Division I head coach within a reasonable time. He is not required to take any position that he determines, ā€œupon reasonable judgment,ā€ isn’t in the best interest of his career - but he also can’t delay or structure new compensation in a way that avoids offsetting his MSU payments.

If Smith secures a new job, he must promptly notify Michigan State and provide full documentation - including his new contract, total compensation, and start date. ā€œTotal compensationā€ is defined broadly to include not only base salary but also deferred pay, bonuses, and other supplemental earnings. If the new job pays less than what he would have earned from MSU, the university must make up the difference, either as reduced monthly payments or a lump sum. If the new position pays more, Michigan State’s payment obligation ends immediately.

If Michigan State fires Smith without cause, prior to 2/1/26, the Spartans will be on the hook for the $500k per month, but that amount will be reduced after Smith "seeks and obtains" employment in the NFL or D-1 college. If, for example, Smith is hired at another university for $2.4 million per year ($200k per month), Michigan State's $500k per month payment would be reduced to around $300k per month for the duration of the payout.

The end of the season is when ā€œeverybodyā€ is transferring. The window becomes irrelevant. You get a good coach and you have a chance to keep them. If you hire now (upon departing coach announcement), you actually have two windows for player departure (new coach hiring and end of semester). Players still have to remain eligible through progress towards a degree. A player that leaves now with a new coach hiring doesn’t pass his classes.

I could only guess. I don't know anyone associated with Sparty. I just knew it was rough up there right now.

If you announce your new coach at the end of the season you've lost the early signing period. That's my point. And, it's not about the jersey there. It's about the NIL packages and the revenue shares.

These are the reasons I think we need to consider when I believe we going to see things shift in hiring timelines.
