Florida Atlantic announced on Wednesday that coach Carl Pelini has resigned from his position, along with defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis. According to Florida Atlantic athletic director Pat Chun, Pelini and Rekstis "tendered their resignation after I confronted them with reports of illegal drug use."

Chun also said both Pelini and Rekstis both admitted to "illegal drug use" and that no other members of the FAU coaching staff or the student-athletes were involved.

ESPN.com's Brett McMurphy reported on Wednesday that both Pelini and Rekstis were recently at a social event where marijuana was used.
"I apologize for exercising poor judgement," said Pelini in a statement on Wednesday.

While Pelini and Rekstis are no longer with the team, FAU will retain it's other eight assistants, with offensive coordinator Brian Wright taking over as head coach. Jovan Dewitt will take over as defensive coordinator. He was the linebackers coach.

Chun also said that the seach for the school's next football coach has already begun.

Pelini was in the middle of his second season with the Owls. After going 3-9 in 2012 Florida Atlantic was off to a 2-6 start to the 2013 season.
Pelini came to Florida Atlantic after serving as defensive coordinator at Nebraska on his younger brother Bo Pelini's staff.

Yeah I don't really care what people do in their free time (drink, smoke, whatever!) but a coach should know better than to do something like this at such an event. Especially WITH the double standard that exists with marijuana. Just an awkward situation all around ..
