🏀 Expectations for 2013-2014 Season

New to the board but always been both a basketball and football guy. Disappointing end but never too early to think about next season.

What are your expectations? I think we should be able to be top 3 in the SEC with a NCAA tourney berth and possible sweet 16 appearance.

If we don't make the tournament, I will be seriously disappointed.

We can play defense all day long although a 7' 1" center will show some weaknesses just about every time. Gueye was not getting it done in the middle and our next "big" guy is Cooper? We have to learn to shoot the ball too. We miss a lot of low-skill shots but was better from 3 this year. I think we are capable of Sweet 16 status next year but we have to improve almost across the board offensively.

Welcome! I think we've all been disappointed in not making the dance again. With our returning talent, I agree we are due for a meaningful stay in the tournament next year. I didn't follow other SEC teams to see what they have returning, but if the conference is stronger as a whole, being at 3 could be more of a challenge, but our strength of schedule would improve and I think the top 4 or 5 should be viable selections.

RTR,

Tim

My expectations is we see more improvements in the offensive play, further development of the players, deeper bench play, end the season top 3 in SEC play, hopefully an SEC tourney win, and making the NCAA tournament.

I read something interesting last night, kinda goes along with what was said on some of the other threads over the last few weeks w/ regards to injuries and expectations next year. Its from Allen Faul with Tuscaloosa's 99.1 - I don't listen to the station so I have no idea about this guy.

Call me a guy that has a glass half full, but I am optimistic about Alabama basketball. If there was ever a time to really get excited about this team, I think it is now.

The first four years of the Anthony Grant era have brought its share of highs and share of lows, so what makes me think things are starting to turn the corner now? Stability.

Hidden in the success and failures of this program in recent years has been a plethora of instability in the roster. Some of the problems stemmed from injuries, but just as many of those problems stemmed from suspensions for violations of team rules, causing the lineup to be shaken at times. Grant, however, never wavered in his expectations.

This year injuries happened, knocking out Andrew Steele for an extended period of time and Carl Engstrom for the entire season. With that said if you paid close attention, I think you started to see this team buy into what Coach Grant was selling.

While the offense struggled some nights, I don’t think you can ever question the intensity and the hustle the team brought on the defensive end of the floor. Off the court, not a single player was suspended for a violation of team rules.

The environment is stabilizing. The foundation has been laid.

Fans were upset with missing out on a trip to the NCAA tournament, but in hindsight the NIT was the best thing that ever happened to this team. Against Northeastern, Stanford and Maryland we saw the intensity on the defensive end start to show up on the offensive side. Trevor Releford has never been afraid to attack the basket, but now we were seeing Trevor Lacey and Levi Randolph drive into the lane more regularly. The slashing drives and penetration into the lane only opened things up on the outside as Rodney Cooper found his shot from beyond the arch. Finally, we saw Alabama’s ability to put teams away.

Most importantly, I saw a crowd at Coleman Coliseum having an impact. The NIT run, whether we think so or not, got people excited about Alabama basketball again-moreso than a one and done in the NCAA tournament. Now, it’s time to build on the momentum built and the pieces seem to be falling into place. Carl Engstrom returns from injury next season and with the continued development of Devnota Pollard and additions of Jimmy Taylor and Shannon Hale, the future is looking bright.

We live in a society where people expect to win and win right now. We want to see our investments mature sooner than later, but I leave you with a story.

There was a coach years ago who emphasized character and winning the right way. It took him years to lay a foundation, 18 in fact, but once the foundation was intact a dynasty was built. After nearly 20 years in coaching, John Wooden won his first title in his 16th season at UCLA. Afterwards, he rattled off another nine to win 10 national championships in his final 12 seasons.

I’m not saying Anthony Grant is the next John Wooden. Again, let me repeat this I am not comparing Anthony Grant to John Wooden- just saying that to win and win the right way it takes some time.

Now, if Alabama doesn’t make a serious step forward in 2013, then it may be time to reevaluate

Hard not to be optimistic when you return 9 off your 10 scholarshipped players, and add a couple of four star recruits.

I've written a lot about our roster already, so no more here, other than to say that hopefully next season we will be able to avoid using Cooper at the 4 except when we want to.

Shannon Hale has some offensive skills that can help us at the 4. Taylor is long and athletic, but defense oriented.

I would like to see us add a wing player in the late signing period.

I'm always amused when fans say "I just hope we can make the tournament." Most of the time they call it the dance. Would this be acceptable in any other sport?

Try this another way. Let's rephrase the comment: "I just wish we could be in the top 64 teams in the whole nation." Kind of puts it in perspective huh. Imagine Alabama football saying that.

"Coach Saban, now that you're here on campus, what can fans expect?"

"You know, it's all a process. We just want to improve and get better every game, aight. If we finish top 64 in the nation, I'm gonna say, you know, it's a success. You have to make the dance to dance, aight."

I'm to the point, either Bama tries to win it all (which probably means hiring a big, big name coach) or else I think this is some sideshow. No Bama fan can realistically expect to go beyone the Sweet 16 ever. What are we cheering for? Yaay, my team's in the top 20. I enjoy watching the team, getting to know the players, seeing the rise and fall of their fortunes. But, there is no hope for huge successes. It's just the way it is.

Sweet 16 or bust next year. Chris Stewart said it best, Grant was hired to win championships and compete at a high level. Next year, he will have a full roster, the players to fit his offensive system, and the talent to compete at a high level. I believe Grant will get us to that level of competing for SEC titles and getting high seeds in the NCAA tournament.

One thing is for sure, our rebounding will be much improved. We had no size in the middle and teams almost doubled us in the rebounding department.

Randolph, Jacobs, and Obasahan really improved in the late stretch. Hope that was just a glimpse at what the future will hold. Cooper and Lacey were way too streaky, need to be more consistent. Maybe once we get a true inside presence, that can open up the perimeter more for them to bank down shots.

Isaac Haas is reportedly leaning our way. He's a 3 star but he can score offensively.

I agree in general with what you are saying, Chief. One thing to remember is that there are some 320 teams playing D-1 nbasketball and around 120 playing D-1 football.

No Alabama fan would have been happy if CNS had said on arrival that he'd be content getting us to a bowl game each year, when half the teams in D-1 make it to some sort of bowl.

It is like what John Wooden said when asked what he thought about coach K reaching the final four a bunch of times, basically that the measure of a team is whether they win it all, not how often they play for it all. Many baseball fans could quickly name the last five world series winners. Only a few could name their opponents.

I think most Bama fans would be content in basketball if we were consistently reaching the levels we reached under Sanderson and Newton. To do so, we not only need a top quality coach, we need to recruit top tier players. We occasionally get some of those, but we are not on the position we are in football recruiting, when almost any player we want will listen to an Alabama recruiting pitch. In basketball we don't get the automatic lisstens that Kentucky, Duke, NC, Kansas get. Not that Grant is a poor recruiter. He got Lacy when Kentucky and Kansas wanted them, and Kansas tried hard to get Releford to come play with his brother.

Next season is important not only from Grant's situation, but a strong season will get some upper tier recruits to be mindful of ccomming to Alabama.

Its the same as in football. Success on the court brings success in recruiting, which brings more success on the court.

Win a game in the NCAA tourney. The problem is that even if we make the tourney and get bounced the first game, Grant's job is safe.

Expectations are just so low right now. If we have $2 mil/yr to pay a basketball coach, we should be getting better results than Grant has produced and IMO we could land someone better. It just hasn't worked out and I don't think he'll turn it around.

I have heard rumblings that we are looking at some juco guys, but nothing concrete.

recruiting information was much easier to come buy under the CMG regime, though that is about the only way it was better.

All it takes is patience. Take Tom Crean for example at Indiana and look how long it took for him to bring Indiana back to national prominence. I think in his 4th year(last year) is when he first when dancing and beat a hot UK team. Now, Indiana is arguably one of the best teams in CBB and will be for a long time coming. Just takes commitment, good team chemistry, and as Joe said, recruiting. Grant will get us there.

I understand what you're saying, but the way I look at it is this:

I want/expect Alabama to compete for SEC championships, both regular season and tournament. Winning them a good number of times. Make the NCAA's, and go further than a one and done. Once you get to the tourney, it's a crap shoop when it comes to the good teams. More often than not, the best team doesn't win the tournament. It's the team that get's hot at the right time. And that is always going to be the case as long as it's single elimination.

So it's not a stretch to look at a team that finished with 23 wins and finished in second place in the SEC that returns almost every player and say they should be a team to watch out for next season. Is the sky the limit for this team next year? Trevor Releford seems to think so "We want to be in the tournament and making a run there. It's all a learning lesion like coach said if we all learn from this and get better and evaluate ourselves then the sky is the limit for us". Guard Trevor Lacey also thinks they can make a run next year "We're looking forward to next year. Unfortunately our season just ended, but you know next year we'll be looking to make a run".

Also, here's a list on the JUCO's.

Grant is watching this guy play tonight.

I know that he now has a UCLA offer, along with several mid majors. He had injuries as a sophomore and junior so he may have been under the radar.

Good lord, 225 . UCLA in a mess right now. He is getting some offers from big name schools but hopefully he sees us as a rising program. He would be a great addition :twothumbs:

Number one seeds have won the tournament 17 of 28 times since the field went to 64.

Maybe so, but it still falls down to who gets hot at the right time.

At least that is my opinion, however wrong it may be.
