Former University of Alabama wide receiver Antonio ā€œA.C.ā€ Carter has filed a fraud lawsuit against coach Lane Kiffin, Florida Atlantic and the state of Florida.

In the complaint, submitted Tuesday in Shelby County, Ala., where Carter resided, he claims Kiffin deliberately misled him regarding a job on the FAU football staff in order to benefit from his family relationship with a prospect.

However, after believing he had been hired and the prospect accepted a scholarship with the Owls, Carter was notified by school officials that he didn’t pass the required background check and would not be employed ā€œdue to two prior minor misdemeanor criminal charges.ā€

Carter claims in the lawsuit that he sent documentation showing the resolution of the charges, one of which the prosecutor refused to pursue more than seven years ago, but FAU didn’t respond and numerous other inquiries went unanswered. That included waiting for hours outside of Patrick Chun’s office only to have the FAU athletic director refuse to meet with him.

The one-year position was assistant strength and conditioning coach, while also working with the wide receivers during practices. It came with a $40,000 salary plus potential bonuses, and $4,000 to cover relocation expenses.

Carter claims that after being assured by Kiffin that his employment was ā€œdone,ā€ he and his wife quit their jobs and he traveled to campus to help the Owls on National Signing Day. He specifically was tasked with recruiting the previously mentioned prospect and two others who FAU successfully signed.

The lawsuit doesn’t mention the primary recruit by name, but it refers to him as being a former 4-star prospect who at one point signed a letter of intent with Florida, became a junior college player and hailed from Carter’s hometown of Tallahassee, Fla.

In 2015, D’Anfernee McGriff was a 4-star running back out of Leon High School in Tallahassee, who before Florida had been committed to Auburn. He played last season at Iowa Western Community College.

ā€œThe prospect’s family had just celebrated New Year’s Eve together with Plaintiff Antonio Carter and his family just a few weeks earlier,ā€ the lawsuit states. ā€œIt is believed that this relationship between Plaintiff Antonio Carter and the coveted prospect was known to the coaches and defendants at the time he was hired.ā€

Kiffin’s coaching staff already has come under significant fire for including assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, who is mentioned in a lawsuit filed against Baylor following its sexual assault scandal. Two assistant coaches arrived from Ole Miss, which is being investigated by the NCAA, and defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Eric Mathies was arrested in 2014 on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.

Carter was a three-year starter for the Crimson Tide before a leg injury ended his career in 2001. Although his comeback attempt lasted until 2004, he finished with 106 receptions for 1,294 yards.

He’s since gotten into coaching, working as a grad assistant at Alabama and UTEP before becoming the passing coordinator at Appalachian State (2008), wide receivers coach at Eastern Michigan (2009) and Samford (2010-12), and completed an internship with the Indianapolis Colts. Carter also has coached at numerous high schools.

It doesn't sound like any paperwork was signed... I think A.C. is S.O.L. Would be a great twist if the kid finds a way to leave and AC Carter winds up at the new school with an analyst job. Ahhh College athletics, where it's all about the kids! lol

It's a tricky game... Using you're relationship with recruits to get better jobs, then being disgruntled when your employer is using you. I'm sure there is more to this story... But when you're trusting Lane Kiffin with your career, you should do so with caution.

Met AC a few years back at a Chick-fil-A when we were returning from Disney. Class act as far as our 10 minute conversation over a biscuit counts.

I hope he gets hired for the sake of his family and such

I've received three notifications through my ESPN app today on this story. All three, a few hours apart, and all three saying the same thing. (That's uncommon for me. Occasionally, occasionally I'll receive two but those are on breaking stories of note.

After the second one I thought, "I bet I know who is pushing this story." After the third, I decided to actually read it and see who was pushing the story.

Knowing how Scarborough feels about Bama, and how he feels about Kiffin, it came as no surprise to see it's coming from him.

I honestly was thinking to myself that this is just sour grapes about not getting a job... until I got to that part. You cant honestly say you're just not gonna give a guy a job because of two misdemeanors (one of which wasnt even pursued by the court) and then turn right around and hire someone who got hit with a DUI charge. Cmon man. Sounds like Kiffin is starting right where he left off at USC, not a good look.

Always wondered what happened to Carter. His career at Bama quietly slipped away. He came in with a lot of promise. Seems like maybe he had a bad leg fracture or some injury that ended his playing days. But I might be thinking of someone else. Either way, now I know where he is.

Kiffin's staff quite a cast of characters! He should consider this guy for Director of Football Operations...

No, you're right he had to have multiple surgeries to fix that leg (and it was never really fixed). It took two years to recover and he only came back for like 4 plays (I think Shula put him in just as a show of respect because he couldnt really move around like he used to). He was a receivers coach at Appy State at one point and I think a graduate assistant at Bama in Saban's first year.

Side note of interest (to me.)

I don't think you'll find another player who is listed on Bama's rosters like AC. I'd have to pull up some old media guides to verify this but I'm pretty sure he's listed as a SR on the '02, '03, and '04 rosters. In '05 and '06 he was working under Price at Texas El-Paso before joining Saban in '07.

Thanks Birdman. Wasn't sure if I had the right guy or not. Never really heard much about how he got hurt, just remember him disappearing. Maybe he got hurt in practice or something. He had a lot of potential, I do remember that.

Spring practice if I remember correctly, just a freak thing. I think it may have been non-contact too.

AC was around the Capstone as a player forever. If anyone has been there longer, I don't know who. He had one of those stress fractures/shin injuries that never completely healed correctly. Very unfortunate, cause it always appeared he was right on the edge of getting his career going again. With Prothro's compound fracture of his leg, it never felt like he would make it all the way back. I was even pleasantly surprised to get to see Prothro play a game of flag football during halftime of an A-day game year's later. Both had a ton of promise and it was just unfortunate they couldn't continue.

Since I made that post earlier this morning I've been trying to think of Alabama players who were granted the sixth year of eligibility besides Carter. I can't think of one. I recall the stories about one of the women's basketball players (Simon, Simmons, something like that) and her ordeal a few years ago. Didn't Ely apply at Toledo?

Seriously, I don't think it's ever happened outside of AC.

Not saying it's going to happen, but didn't Robert Foster receive a medical redshirt during his 2015 season? I believe he redshirted as a freshman so if he was so inclined would qualify for the 6th year. I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Keep in mind both the five-year clock and their four seasons of competition. Even if an athlete gets a medical hardship waiver, he\ needs to have time left on their five-year clock to use that season.

This is problematic for athletes took a normal redshirt season or sat out due to a transfer. An athlete can generally not use a medical redshirt in those cases unless they get a clock extension or sixth year waiver. To do that the athlete show they lost two seasons outside of his or her control. The medical redshirt would be one, but the athlete would still need to show another.

Interesting, so more likely Foster is a redshirt senior.
