Running - Their linebackers are extremely fast and good......I would
think we could attack them the same way we attacked BC. Now the 10-15
yard runs we had are probably going to be more like 5-7 yards, but you
get the point. Also, having a wr or ryan williams come behind the
tailback in a reverse look (and I do think we need to run that
reserve/wide sweep to keep them honest) might hold the linebackers
enough, or have them moving the wrong direction, to bust some plays.
Mt. Cody doesn't scare me[/B][/B] that much b/c he doesn't get up field, he
more or less holds his ground and takes up 2 or 3 blockers. From what
I hear he shades to the right side which is where Sergio will be this
year. And if I were playing against him, I would take his knees out
every play, not dirty just clean blocks.

Passing - They will play bump and run for the most part, from what
I've heard. I think we need to get the TT rolling to keep them
honest. That will give him more throwing lanes and also the option to
pick up some yards running (Tyrod, a plea to you, please run out of
bounds and/or slide). We need to use the TE's a lot, with a new
safety and play action we may be able to get some nice gains over the
middle. Their linebackers play downhill so with good play action we
can hopefully take advantage of that. And with Tyrod being a threat
to run, they probably won't be able to blitz everyone so that should
help in o-line blocking.

Defense - we have Bud Foster.......he'll figure it out. Though I
would hope we go after their new qb with everything we got. From what
I hear he's very accurate so I would like to see if he can be as
accurate when he's throwing off his back foot or running for his life.
And we got to knock him down......a lot. With them breaking in new
lineman, I would bet that Foster will be throwing a lot of
twists/stunts at them to get them thinking, thus being a step slow.
With Julio Jones, I would imagine we'll let Virgil take the other wide
receiver and roll zone coverage over JJ. Since Bud updated the
defensive scheme in 2004, we don't let wr's beat us. I don't remember
any USC wr's getting the best of us.

Going to be a battle, if we win I think it's by less than 10, if we
lose I think it's by less than 10.

I'll take our guys with a 3rd year QB 17-10

Wow you are really thinking that Va Tech will rely on Bama being "green" at some positions and under prepared. Good luck on that.

With Cody taking 2-3 blockers, your TE's will be far from open. I also look forward you Va Tech trying to take the corner on our defense.

Va Tech's Oline is far from being veterans and is just as big of an unknown. Your QB even though a 3rd year starter is far from great.


dont see Va Tech scoring 17 unless Bama has 28 or so.

Also I hope they run reverses and gimmick plays. They take to long to develop and our defense will eat it up. I wonder how it is that they expect us to consistently give up 5-7 yard gains on the ground. And if they don't think Julio can hurt them then I like our chances.

A respectful right up deserves a respectful response...Tyrod will have to throw the ball. Tim Tebow had to throw the ball to beat us in SECCG. VT aint no Florida. Good luck Hokies.

Mount Cody tieing up multiple blockers means that the other defenders won't have to pinch to the inside. Good luck on your sweeps, reverses and options in that case. Tyrod's athleticism may cause some problems on scrambles and broken plays, but our defense will make VT have to throw effectively to beat us.

Offensively we know that their speed and athleticism will make it tough to run on the edges. We will probably try to run straight at them to negate this aspect. As long as we throw when we want to instead of when down and distance force us to, I am not worried about their pass rush.

Hey you know, its still possible to sit back and play zone, have someone make sure they contain TT, and rush 5 or 6 guys. They are called zone blitzes, and our coach likes them.

Also, he used "keeping them honest" twice. I dont know if he understands how well disciplined the guys are in what they do. One of the things I saw alot last year was how little people were out of position. I dont think they will try to base a game plan on misdirection because of that.

Though I do agree with him on attacking our offense. Id attack them till they made us stop attacking if I was Vt. Though homerism leads me to believe that our Oline can deal with it

I haven't had time to completely break down VT for my Trickle Down column yet, and I don't want to waste what I have so far...

but I am leaning somewhere in the area of Bama wins by 21-28 points. The game won't be as close as many are thinking. Tech has too many offensive deficiencies and their defense, while good, will not do well against our offense when their offense doesn't get them off the field. Tech will go 3-out a lot. Also look for Javy to have a big day.

Granted I am basing a lot of what I say off of rumors and he said she said coming out of Ttown, but I feel that we will be able to run the ball. They wont. I know it is hard to believe, but overall our OL may be better this year than last - even without Smith and Caldwell.

I dont know about our Oline being better than last year's but I feel they will hold their own. I doubt their offense can move much, and if we can run up the middle, Ill believe in a 2+ score win. If the O has alot of trouble though, then I see it being close.

BigFan I could see something like the NC game against Miami in 93, where we pounded away on the inside against their defense to the point that their outside people started tp pinch to the inside to help stop the run. By the 4th quarter we were able to run on the corners. I am about as optimistic as you about our o-line, just not as sure about how good they will be in the first game.

i bet at some point saban puts fluker in for a few plays and runs the ball right behind him just like andre smith last year..

it would only make sense to give him some reps, and hell, it might work.. you don't need experience to plow the guy lined up in front you..
