Edward Herrmann, Gilmore Girls star, dead at 71

Edward Herrmann, an actor perhaps best known for playing Richard Gilmore on "Gilmore Girls," has died, his manager confirmed Wednesday. He was 71.

His accolades include an Emmy in 1999 for his guest appearances as a law professor on "The Practice" and a Tony. Most recently, he appeared on several episodes of "The Good Wife," "How I Met Your Mother" and ABC's "Black Box."

Herrmann appeared on all seven season on "Gilmore Girls," which ran from 2000-2007 (first on the WB, then the CW). He played Franklin D. Roosevelt , for which he received two Emmy nominations, on "Eleanor and Franklin" as well as 1977's "Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years." The actor was nominated for five Emmys overall.

He's also known for playing the father of Macaulay Culkin's "Richie Rich" in the 1994 movie, as well as Max in 1987's "The Lost Boys."

Herrmann was married twice and is survived by three children.
