šŸˆ Does Alabama have any other option at punter?

Sidestory.

Stephen Smith, of TDA Magazine, is the first one I saw break this yesterday. I caught it on Twitter which led me to look at a few others sites for confirmation. I got lost in the process...

As I'm reading over the report I catch this tidbit regarding ,

His lone season away from home was the toughest of his life, as he learned that his mom was diagnosed with cancer. He never wanted to leave her, but she encouraged him to pursue an education and take advantage of his athletic scholarship. Despite the pain, Brenier heeded his mother’s words and then fate would intervene.
While he was expecting to return to the Panthers’ roster for his sophomore year, a phone from the legendary program in his home state was made to him.
The individual on the call was Alabama’s special teams coach, Bobby Williams.
Stupid statement. How do you write about college football and not know that's a NCAA violation?

Understand me for a second. I'm already laughing at this article. It's...well, bad.

Due to the struggles of true freshman Skyler Delong, sources have confirmed with Touchdown Alabama Magazine that walk-on Mike Brenier will start at punter for Alabama this weekend versus the Volunteers. Bernier, a native of Madison, Ala., enters the matchup in playing for something bigger himself. The senior and product of Bob Jones High School will perform his role as a specialist in the honor of his mother, who recently died due to breast cancer.
Kudos for being the guy that got the news out there. But my god, you have to at least spell his name right at the beginning of the article.

Oh, going back to my getting lost while I was processing this article.

I've casually followed Smith from his days in journalism school at UA. At SEC Media days I thought his questions were well thought out, and I thought well of them. It's been interesting watching his career as it's grown. I'm felt empathy, as well as sympathy, for him knowing the people he's linked to through his "internet avenues."

This morning a lot of that changed. It's not due to the article, it's due to a simple name change on Twitter.

Mr Smith,
That's not a good look.
Sincerely,

If he is as mentally weak as it appears he needs to move on.
I know this is messing with his head. There's no way around that.

I feel I have said this enough, but it seems I need to say it a lot. His mechanics have gone to hell in games. Maybe that's the mental you're talking about here. I'm not sure if the game replay is up on youtube. They have been pulling game videos all year. I know this...his kicks look different each time.

That guy that spent so much time with the Jalen videos this summer, remember him? I'm surprised he hasn't done this with Skyler and we could see some video of his mechanics. Oh wait...

Deer lowered now I am nervous about starting a walk on punter in neyland for his first action
Another little twist...

Two games this year where the offense has not had to punt.

We'd have to go back to Charleston Southern to find the last time that happened, back to 2014 to find the second game. From 2014-2017 there were three games where Bama didn't have to punt.

What if they don't this weekend?

Since 2009 Bama has had seven games where they haven't had to punt. I didn't go back any farther.

Mike sent a message to Alabama special teams coach Bobby Williams to express his interest in the Crimson Tide and to see if there was a spot available. Williams responded within a week asking Mike to come on a visit. Not long after, Alabama offered Mike a preferred walk-on spot and he committed April 17.

It's just bad writing which is what you were saying in the first place.

Oh yeah, but I'd say horrible instead of bad.

He mentions that Bernier "planned on returning to the Panthers for his sophomore season." That's just not close to be even remotely true--he'd already given up his scholarship for Eastern Illinois and had contacted Jacksonville State about playing there.

Great story and Bernier looked solid back there today. He wasn't JK Scott, but 41 yard average was plenty serviceable.
Saban was asked about this today and it's exactly what we've seen saying and hearing. His technique has been fine through the week, but on Saturday's it just falls apart. Sounds like we'll see him again after his "reboot."
