TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama and Notre Dame announced a home-and-home series between the Crimson Tide and Fighting Irish set for the 2028 and 2029 seasons on Thursday.

ā€œIt doesn’t get much more tradition-rich than Alabama and Notre Dame when it comes to college football,ā€ Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne said. ā€œWhat a great opportunity this is for our program and for our fans to kick off the 2028 and 2029 seasons.ā€

The first meeting will take place in South Bend, on Sept. 2, 2028, with Notre Dame returning the trip to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 1, 2029.

The 2028 matchup will be the be the eighth meeting between two of college football’s most storied programs and the first since the Crimson Tide defeated the Irish 42-14 in the BCS National Championship Game in Miami, Fla., at the conclusion of the 2012 season.

ā€œWe are excited to be able to add a home-and-home series with a team like Notre Dame,ā€ Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. ā€œAlabama and Notre Dame represent two of the most storied programs in college football history. What a great opportunity for our team and our fans to be able to witness these teams play in two of the sport’s most iconic venues in Tuscaloosa and South Bend.ā€

Notre Dame holds a 5-2 edge in the series with three meetings coming in bowl games. The teams first squared off on Dec. 31, 1973, in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and then met again on Jan. 1, 1975, (1974 season) at the Orange Bowl in Miami.

The two programs then held home-and-home series in 1976 (South Bend) and 1980 (Birmingham) and then again in 1986 (Birmingham) and 1987 (South Bend). The Crimson Tide won the 1986 game at Legion Field 7-0.

Alabama is scheduled to open the 2018 season on Sept. 1 in Orlando, Fla., against Louisville. The Crimson Tide will then face Duke in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in 2019 and Miami (Fla.) in the 2021 game in Atlanta.

Perkins was handpicked by Coach Bryant (to be fair to the BOD).

Alabama and Notre Dame will play in 2028 and 2029.

The deal between Alabama and Notre Dame to play in a decadewas completed April 5, according to the contract signed by the two parties.

The five-page document spells out the particulars of the games set for 2028 in South Bend and 2029 in Tuscaloosa.

They will exchange $1 million payments from the host to the visitor, according to the contract obtained through an open records request. Alabama has received as much as $6 millionfor non-conference games played at neutral sites in recent seasons.

Each school will get 5,000 tickets to sell for the road game. Tickets will not be required for visiting bands or cheerleaders.

The TV rights for the games will belong to the home teams. Notre Dame currently has a contract with NBC that runs through the 2025 season.

There are also a number of provisions about the cancellation of the two-game series. It may be called off if the number of conference games required change, "an act of God," war, terrorism, civil unrest or court order comes before Jan. 1, 2020. There's also a provision involving "discontinuance of the NCAA in its current form ..." or change of conference affiliation.

If one school breaks the contract for any reasons not listed, it must pay $750,000 if received two or more years before the game -- $1.5 million if its less than two years and more than one and $3 million in the final year before kickoff.

Alabama will play at Notre Dame on Sept. 2, 2028 with the return trip set for Sept. 1, 2029 in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

This is the first home-and-home on the books for Alabama since playing Penn State at home in 2010 and on the road in 2011.
