@TerryP I can see your point about substitutions.

1st Team DB's & ILB played 100% of all downs. 1st Team OLB played 89% of all downs. 2 guys handled 50% of the NT downs.

And I'll readily admit that we don't have that many guys with decent experience past those starters. I wonder why Shane Lee didn't get any time just to give HTT & Harris some rest.

I was inferring strictly from the spreadsheet that Lee was not injured. He was listed as injured for the previous 2 games. But oh well.

Really is amazing that so few 2's got any reps.

It's like that a lot with Saban in big games... it's just his m.o. (a holdover trait from his NFL days). The UF game last year was the same. If there was ever a sign that Saban was going to loosen his grip some on that tendency though, it was Saturday after the game when spoke about it with the media.

Am I remembering wrong here: The 2016's defense was constantly getting rotated. We did have more depth than this team & perhaps that's the reason the 2021 guys are being kept on the field because the others don't know their assignments. But I remember one game where Kirby had 16 guys on defense on the field after the TV timeout & 5 ran off as soon as they knew the offense that was coming onto the field. Danielson marveled at that because the 11 that stayed on the field didn't have to waste their energy running 50+ yards from the sideline. I thought it was brilliant how well Kirby was rotating guys. Am I wrong? If not, why would that just get flushed when Kirby left?

2016 would have been Pruitt, but regardless, it would depend on the game. In the bigger games (the LSU's, auburn's, post-season games, etc.), unless it was a blowout, there wasn't much subbing. Now, there was more diversity in the packages which led to some "subbing", but that's no different than today, they just changed packages a bit more. As an example, if you look at that chart above, they've been in rabbit for 121 defensive plays in the first 3 games this year. That's more than they were in rabbit all season in 2016, they were much more diverse in previous seasons. But, like the Washington game that season for example, just 18 guys played a defensive snap (and 2 of them combined for 3 snaps).

@Brandon Van de Graaff so you're saying the substitution of past/present has more to do with scheme than giving guys a break?

I think that’s a big part of it, yes. @TerryP and I touched on it in another thread this week that I can’t link right now (in the car), but in most cases in tight games, there’s not a lot of subbing going on (to give guys breathers).

Y'all clarified in my Defense laid an egg post. But I didn't connect the dots with scheme changes being the primary basis for personnel change & not rotating for the sake of rotating.

G'Mac said the following regarding the personnel ā€œI saw Christian Harris have to cover a whip route by a wide receiver, he had to react to a counter, he had to get wide on a speed option. He had about six or seven different looks and different formations to react to in a period of eight or nine plays. They went right after Alabama's strength and they said, 'We're going to get you thinking. And if you're thinking, you'll play slow.' And that's exactly what they did at the second level. So I would say that, hey, you can blame the coaches. You can want to fire everybody in the building. But ultimately it's about the players. And the players, their performance on Saturday left a lot to be desired."

HTT & Harris were gassed & not making their reads. It went downhill from there. Fortunately, our offense could still maintain those 3 long drives in the second half. Plus their kicker missing their extra point was a stroke of luck. I'll take it.

The Swamp was at 84% humidity when that game started. There's just not that many teams that visit there going to be able to keep up in those conditions. Homefield advantage worked well against our offense (mainly penalties & communications) & getting gassed quickly. I do think those factors were underestimated.

Outside of that, we just showed our age as team. So did UF, especially at the LOS were they dominated.
