🏈 Defensive Depth Chart - Pre-Fall Camp.

Roughly three weeks ago we put together our best educated guess on what the offensive depth chart would look like to begin fall camp. Now we have compiled our thoughts on what the defensive side of the ball will look like as well.

There is one caveat that bears mentioning here. Last season we spent 80% of the snaps in our nickel or dime formation even though our base is a 3-4 scheme. For this depth chart we'll stick with the 3-4 but do expect to see a lot of multiple sets again this season.

* If all were healthy, I truly believe Menzie would get the start over Milliner in our 3-4 and both would be on the field when we moved to a nickel formation. Unfortunately, at this time, whether Menzie will be available when practice starts next Thursday isn't known at this point. He's still dealing with a sports hernia issue that he dealt with several months ago.

Early next week we should know how "ready" he'll be for Thursday.

Offensive Depth Chart

Terry - I've seen you and others put Ed Stinson as the starting DE...I was under the impression that he'd be a little on the light (weight) side for that position. Haven't we traditionally used bigger, more running stuffing type players in that position the last couple of years?

I haven't seen an official weight on Stinson in some time, but I was thinking that he was 240 maybe 250....giving up about 30 pounds to what we have had there the last couple of years.

Correction - rolltide.com lists Stinson as 279 lbs. - Has he put on a lot of weight? I had in my mind that he was more of a Jack LB Type body when he was signed. - Hopefully he has been able to hang on to that agility.

i think he was like 230 in high school so wouldnt be surprised if he was 270 now...

i just understand why we dont move Mosley to the SAM, so he and Nico are on the field at the same time at times.

If you are talking about replacing Harris with Mosley, the light has come on for Jerrell. He and Saban had quite a few talks in December and January. Jerrell has said he wish he could have his first year back. IF he would have "bought in," and that's his words, he'd be in a completely different position now.

I expect some big things from Harris this fall; and so does the staff.

Noteworthy that John Fulton and Nick Perry are not on the two deep in the secondary. They would be starting at half the SEC schools.

Notice the note on Menzie.

Fulton, Jones, Perry...maybe even more get more playing time and a move up the depth chart.

I'm hearing his hernia might be worse than expected.

Seems that Menzie was at practice this morning and participating, is he being limited?

I haven't asked. I'll probably not considering all they've got on their plate.

We have to keep this in mind. The first few days are just fundamentals work and there is no way to tell who is limited and who isn't. It's short and pads.

We'll get a better idea this afternoon/evening with Saban's first presser.

Menzie says he's OK, for what that's worth. It appears his trip to Philly to get it checked out a couple of weeks ago came back with the "all clear."

Any word on how Jesse Williams is coming along ? I was reading through the Maple Street Press today and what little that was written about him wasnt great....not necessarily bad...just not what I was expecting. Some of that was from Luginbill.

Quick synopsis?

The only "handicap" Jesse really has had to deal with is learning the system. He's coming along each day of practice.

Thats good to hear. I guess he is picking up the "technique" of the position well enough to not be of any concern.

The thing about Jesse, and Dial for that matter, is the learning curve isn't as large as it would be for a true frosh. The JUCO experience helps with the technique.

Jessie looks to be on the outside more than the NG position, as I see it, so it's a matter of him learning the calls Dont'a is throwing out. Of course, added to that is the gap assignments...well, you know the drill.
