🏈 Defense

Some DB's apparently! Utah picked us apart almost to the point of embarassment. Not only that but looking back on multiple occasions throughout the season I remember Marquis Johnson getting burnt sooooooo many times.

What do we need to do to be successful against the spread?

depends on what kind of spread.

Utah's offense, much like last year's Hawaii's spread offense, should be defended exactly like Georgia defended against it. increase speed all over the field.

for example, use DEs at DT, and increase the number of safeties and corners on the field.

against Utah's offense, PARTICULARLY WITH AN EMPTY BACKFIELD AND NO HUDDLE, i would have used only one LB behind the line of scrimmage (my third fastest LB) while placing my two fastest LBs at DE. then i would have used Washington, Deaderick, Greenwood, and Dareus at DT. i would have used Chapman and Cody only on obvious running downs or maybe rotate one of them at a time when Utah had any backs in the backfield.

it is likely that Saban didn't have enough eligible and experienced DBs to put on the field against Utah. however, as he admitted after the game, he should have been using our LBs at DE much sooner in the game, if not the entire game.

Holding them to 10 points for the final 4/5ths of the game could hardly be called embarrassing. The first 1/5th of the game is the definition of.

Whatever caused the initial "issue" quickly changed, so whatever it is is a quick fix, so not a tough problem.

Tackling was the key thing that failed us early. Getting those rush ends into our system will help some but so many of those routes thrown were 3 step ones with virtually no time to get a push started. The out routes and mostly the crossing routes caused problems. I liked the look of putting Hightower and Upshaw at end and leaving Ro in the middle with a true DE at the nose. I think those changes and having more depth in the fuutre will only help.
