The first early signing day period is over (we think)
The good
Alabama added two big commitments today in Eyabi Anoma, five-star defensive end from St. Francis High School in Baltimore, and Christian Barmore, four-star defensive tackle from Neumman-Goretti High School in Philadelphia. Both recruits were predicted to sign with the Tide. Both have some ground to make up in the classroom. Anoma is in better shape and issues not expected. I am hearing the same with Barmore. Alabama would not have accepted his commitment/signature if they did not believe he has a good chance to qualify.
The bad
Brenton Cox, Rivals100 defensive end from Stockbridge High School in Georgia, signed with Georgia on Wednesday instead of Alabama. This has been a two-team race since he decommitted from Ohio State a few weeks ago. Alabama heavily recruited Cox throughout the year, but in the end he decided to stay in his home state- a selling point Kirby appears is winning over with just about 90-percent of the top players in the Peach State.
Alabama commitment Vernon Jackson, three-star linebacker from Boling High School in Texas, went back and forth the last few days trying to decide if he would sign early. He told Alabama on Tuesday he will likely go ahead and sign. He decided on Wednesday morning not to sign and expects to take visits including trips to Alabama, Texas and Texas A&M in January. I still really like Alabama's chances to sign him in February.
The ugly
Nadab Joseph, Rivals100 cornerback from Norland High School in Miami, pulled a stunner on Wednesday morning when he decided not to sign early with Alabama. There really hasn't been much to worry about with Joseph. We are also not sure what suddenly changed. Joseph signed his letter of intent with Georgia on Wednesday night in one of the most surprising moments of the recruiting season.
Dominick Anderson, four-star tight end from Arizona Western in Yuma, is a very good football player. He also seems immature. He told Alabama several times throughout his recruitment his plans to commit only to go elsewhere (Texas and Tennessee).
Anderson was scheduled to announce around 10:00 a.m. (CST) on Wednesday, but cancelled his appearance on a newscast in San Diego. He kept most guessing throughout the day. I don't know if Alabama and Texas A&M fans were tweeting at him as much as Tennessee fans. Doesn't seem like it. He loved the attention and committed to the Vols. I'm not saying that was his reason. I think Alabama felt like they were jerked around the whole time, and it came true yet again.
What's next?
I said Alabama wanted to get through today and then re-group to figure out what it wants to do with the remaining spots in the class. Alabama will have a few recruiting discussions, but make no mistake it's time to give full focus to the game against Clemson on January 1 in New Orleans.
The coaching staff will get together for lengthy discussions regarding the remaining spots when the season comes to an end which Alabama hopes is after the national championship game.
Alabama will look to see which prospects are still out there, who did not sign today. Several Crimson Tide targets remain strongly in the mix. Alabama currently sits with the No. 6 recruiting class in the country according to Rivals.com. The next month will determine if Alabama can finish in the top five. I believe it has a strong chance to do so if can add key targets.
Defensive back recruiting more important than ever....
Nick Saban said on Wednesday that Alabama expects to lose up to five defensive backs and will like to replace that many guys. It's what I've been hearing for a while and what has been discussed on the recruiting board for at least a month. I don't think Coach Saban expected to lose Joseph to the out of state SEC school to the east on Wednesday evening.
Alabama has to try and sign Patrick Surtain, five-star cornerback and Tyson Campbell, Rivals100 cornerback from American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida. These guys are extremely important targets and Alabama has to continue to put on the full court press to have a great defensive back class.
Where do things stand with both of those guys at the moment? It's hard to say. Alabama is definitely in the mix with each of them. Alabama believes it can sign at least one of the two. Derrick Ansley and Joe Pannuzio saw them three times in December. Nick Saban also still has his in-home visit to use with both elite prospects. Both will also take official visits to Alabama in January.
Alabama, Miami, Georgia and LSU seemed like the most talked about schools when it comes to Campbell. Campbell also has family in the Atlanta area where it's being use as a strong recruiting tool for the Bulldogs. Miami and Alabama have been considered two of his long time favorites.
Surtain was considered a heavy LSU from the start of his recruitment. Most think he will still end up in Baton Rouge. Alabama has really done a good job recruiting him. Alabama will make a very big push for both prospects next month. Both have an opportunity for early playing time or even the chance to start as a true freshman in Tuscaloosa.
Isaac Taylor-Stuart, five-star cornerback from St. Augustine High School in San Diego, is still considering an official visit to Alabama in January. Kelvin Joseph, Rivals100 safety from Scotlandville High School in Baton Rouge, will take a official visit to Alabama in January. I expect Alabama makes a big push fo these guys now. Taylor-Stuart favored Alabama early in the recruiting process. Joseph seemed liked he was on the verge of flipping to Alabama two summers ago.
I'm told these are really the only defensive backs Alabama is considering at this time. I expect another player or two emerge in January. Alabama had interest in Jaycee Horn, four-star cornerback from Alpharetta High School in Georgia, and Trey Dean, four-star safety from Dutchtown High School in Newton, Georgia. Horn signed with South Carolina, and Dean signed with Florida on Wednesday.
Will Alabama add a quarterback?
I'm told the decision has not been made at this point. Emory Jones, five-star from Heard County High School in Franklin, Georgia, surprised many when he took an official visit to Florida last weekend. Most assumed his decision was down to Alabama and Georgia. Jones saw an opportunity for immediate playing time at Florida. Alabama did not even send him scholarship papers this week. He gave clear indication he was not signing with the Tide.
Nick Saban has always liked taking a quarterback in each class. It's been assumed he would take one this year. Alabama has recruited 4-5 quarterbacks. Most who were committed elsewhere including Jones throughout most of the process. Hard to recruit the top guys in the country when you have Jalen Hurts and Tua on campus for the next 3-4 years.
Alabama was in it for Jones, but I don't think anyone can fault him for going to Gainesville. Saban mentioned in his press conference on Wednesday afternoon he would like to take a quarterback.
James Foster, three-star from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, seems like the most likely candidate to receive a committable offer. Alabama will evaluate some other guys and likely bring in a few in January for official visits. I do not see Alabama just automatically giving a green light to Foster to commit. More evaluations both on-and-off-the-field with others before a final decision is reached.
Defensive front remains critical
Alabama signed a pair of defensive tackles on Wednesday in Barmore (mentioned above) and Stephon Wynn, four-star from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Alabama remains in the mix for a few other top interior linemen which includes Tyler Friday, Rivals100 from Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, New Jersey, and Bobby Brown, four-star from Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas.
Nick Saban has used his in-home visits with Brown and Friday. Both have also taken their official visits to Alabama. Alabama will have to depend on Karl Dunbar and Tosh Lupoi in recruiting these guys the final month.
Brown remains committed to Texas A&M, but he is still giving very strong consideration to Alabama. I'm told his mom loves the Alabama coaching staff and will not mind her son being a part of the Crimson Tide. Alabama hit a home run with Friday last weekend on his official visit. Alabama is really hoping to add at least one of these two key defensive tackle targets in February.
Alabama is also strongly in the mix for Malik Langham, three-star defensive end from Lee High School in Huntsville. Langham received an offer from Alabama a few weeks ago. He is scheduled to take an official visit to Alabama on January 19. Alabama will likely begin putting the full court press on him in January after missing out on Brenton Cox.
Alabama has to keep its LB corp intact
The Crimson Tide added a major piece to the linebacker puzzle on Wednesday with the addition of Eyabi Anoma. Anoma is recruited by Alabama as an outside linebacker/edge rusher. He was considered the No. 1 target at the position for a very long time. Alabama compares him to Terrell Lewis.
Vernon Jackson (mentioned above) and Quay Walker, four-star from Crisp County High School in Cordele, Georgia, will take official visits in January. The Tide commitments are heavily pursued by other programs. Jackson will visit Texas and Texas A&M. Walker expects to visit Auburn, Georgia and possibly FSU again. Alabama does not want to lose either one of these key commitments. Alabama has actually done a really good job with Walker the last few weeks. Derrick Ansley has spent a lot of time with Walker's family. He has also attended two of Walker's basketball games.
Alabama was once considered a lock for JJ Peterson, Rivals100 from Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia. Alabama will continue to recruit Peterson and expects to get him on campus for an official visit in January. Tennessee is currently considered the favorite to land his signature.
Alabama was working on a visit last weekend with Georgia signee Adam Anderson, five-star defensive end from Rome High School in Georgia. Anderson was scheduled to take a very quiet visit to Tuscaloosa on Saturday. However, his team won the state championship on Friday and then had a parade on Saturday. Anderson decided to stay home instead. Alabama was pushing for him to wait until February to sign in order to get him down for a visit. Georgia made sure he went ahead and signed on Wednesday
Quick hitters
-Penei Sewell, Rivals100 offensive tackle from Desert Hills High School in St. George, Utah, delayed his announcement until February. He released a top four late Tuesday night of Alabama, Oregon, Utah and USC. I think Alabama has a better chance with Nick Petit-Frere, Rivals100 offensive tackle from Berkeley Prep in Tampa. Petit-Frere is very high on Alabama's wish list. Nick Saban has yet to use his in-home visit, and the elite Sunshine State lineman will take an official visit to Alabama in January.
-Justyn Ross, five-star wide receiver from Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama, Jaylen Waddle, Rivals100 wide receiver from Episcopal School in Houston, and Jacob Copeland, four-star wide receiver from Escambia High School in Pensacola, all remain top targets for Alabama. Alabama remains confident it will land Waddle next month. Ross is going to be extremely close. I was leaning Clemson last month, but I think Alabama has even things with him. Alabama is still very much in the picture with Copeland because of Mike Locksley. Locks has taken control of his recruitment and the two have a very close relationships.
Luke Ford, Rivals100 tight end from Carterville High School in Illinois, is still out there. Ford named Alabama his favorite a few times throughout the process. He will take an official visit to Alabama in January. I probably consider Georgia the favorite here. I think Alabama messed up by focusing on Dominick Anderson instead of Ford the last few months. Can they get back in? I just don't now right now.
