I thought CNS was a big proponent of the early signing period?

I kind of like it. If a kid is sick of being hounded by coaches they deserve some piece and quiet. Some love the attention and still have the option to play it out. Seems like a nice middle ground

Saban went off on it yesterday and agree 100% with his arguments. IDK if hes flip flopping or not, dont remember him ever talking about it before but alot of smaller schools are pushing kids to sign early in a way to make sure that no other bigger schools catch onto them later. I've seen it firsthand so far, with a couple of FCS schools pushing a kid in my area to sign in December even though he wants to hold out to see if Troy or UAB offers. Look at Josh Jacobs. He only had one FBS offer before right at the very end when Bama signed him. Tulsa very well could have pushed to get him to sign early and Bama would have never been able to make that move. It def. has its pros and cons though.

Wow I totally missed his comments yesterday. Seems pretty disgruntled by it.

Ultimately I think it's a great insurance policy for recruits. That way if fluke injuries happen or guys like Saban who like to pull the grey shirt card or recruit over a kid late in the process because they get a player, the kid is already sign/sealed/delivered.

Good part is neither party HAS to agree to those terms. The kid can wait and so can the school. I think it's great the smaller schools can push kids to sign early... And they should. If the bigger school isn't sold on the prospect and the smaller school is, who's fault is that? Heaven forbid the smaller school does a better job evaluating than the Alabama/LSU/FLorida's of the world.

JMO. I see your points too. But like I said, the more options for kids the better. No one is holding a gun to their head to sign early, but obviously this is a nice option for kids who don't want the drama or have concerns about issues down the road.

Josh Jobe choosing Bama. What it means:

The commitment

Josh Jobe, four-star cornerback from Cheshire Academy in Connecticut, announced his commitment to the University of Alabama on Saturday. Jobe has been a long-time Miami commitment. Many felt he would flip to the Crimson Tide. Alabama sealed the deal two weeks ago when Nick Saban visited Jobe at his high school, and then traveled to Miami to spend time with his family.
Jobe is in Tuscaloosa with his family this weekend taking an official visit. He will not take an official visit to Miami.

The player

"Very athletic kid. Quick twitch athlete who explodes to the ball and has shown good ball skills. Athleticism is what he gets by on now, but he can be coached up to be very good on either side of the ball."- Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell

The numbers

Alabama has four defensive back commitments in the class of 2018. All will sign with the Tide next week. Nadab Joseph, Saivion Smith and Jalyn Armour-Davis will enroll at Alabama in January. Jobe will not enroll early. Alabama pressed for a big defensive back class. It has four of its top targets on board. Jobe has been a major target for the Tide for a very long time.

Alabama hopes to sign at least one more defensive back. There is a chance Alabama will add two more if it can land the right players. Alabama has visited Patrick Surtain, five-star cornerback and Tyson Campbell, Rivals100 cornerback from American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida, three times in the last three weeks. Both will take official visits to Alabama in January. Both are definite takes for the Tide.

There are a few other defensive backs who will take visits to Alabama next month. Isaac Taylor-Stuart, five-star cornerback from St. Augustine High School in San Diego, will visit. Kelvin Joseph, Rivals100 safety from Scotlandville High School in Baton Rouge. I do think Jobe's commitment eliminates the possibility of Trey Dean, four-star safety from Dutchtown High School in Hampton, Georgia, from having an opportunity to commit to Alabama.

Alabama will host Jaycee Horn, four-star cornerback from Alpharetta High School in Georgia, the final weekend of January. Horn remains very much in play for the Crimson Tide. Alabama could accept his commitment if they miss on Campbell and/or Surtain.

Saban never has been a fan of the early signing period as it's constructed. He said on more than one occasion if the NCAA does adopt this he'd like to see it at an earlier date (IE: before the season starts) for somewhat of the same reason you've stated here. As it is now, they are still heavily recruited throughout their senior season so there's no benefit for the student athlete, at all.

"I didn't like it when we did it, and I don't like it now," Saban said in a news conference. "I don't think it's in the players' best interest. I don't see how it benefits anybody. It's really stressful for everyone. We're all trying to get ready for bowl games or playoff games, and we've got a signing date right in the middle of when we're practicing.
You get both sides here: a player's perspective and that of a coach.

Cutcliffe made a comment in the last few days of how they hosted 16 families over the weekend and the next morning he was in Texas. Both Saban and Cutcliffe have said, "where's the time?"

We know how anal Saban is with schedule. For him to say it is creating issue because there's little time? It's an issue.

Or people freaking out about it when continually told to wait?

Some never lead you wrong.
Like Andrew Bone?
What are you saying about Andrew Bone? Did he say be patient or what he creating angst? I don't follow him any longer when he left Kirk. I was referring to people here saying the staff is being selective and people needed to just chill out. If I've seen that once here I've seen it 50 times.

Andrew Bone quote this week:

10. I'm in the same boat with many of you. I think there is growing concern in Tuscaloosa regarding this recruiting class. I think Alabama will meet some needs, but it will also miss on several key targets which hasn't been the case throughout the last several years. There is a good chance Alabama finishes with a top five recruiting class, but still a little disappointed because needs were not met at certain positions.

Pretty sure most in the industry were starting to question the slow start and lull. I know for a while they all made the same talking points as some on here as being patient, selective, yadda yadda, but in the last few weeks before Joseph, Smith, and Jobe committed the writers were starting to express concern with missed targets and such with the first signing day looming. I was starting to question some things, but once again, you gotta have faith in the process. Now we've loaded up on defensive backs, we need some more beef on the two lines. I wouldn't mind skipping a year at running back and use those spots for more beef, especially consideribg we got the #1 back committed for 2019.

I'm not going to start speculating on Bobby Brown (though my gut tells me it's going to be a hard flip for Tosh from A&M.) I expect Anoma to sign. (I think he may be the best pass rusher available in this years class, fwiw.) There have been some people saying we should expect Brandon Kaho to commit to Bama--he committed to Washington yesterday. Baramore looks good but it's important to note Kirby is on him big time hoping he will schedule an OV for Athens. I do think Cox is headed to UGA. I don't know what to make of Peterson. He's been favoring Bama for almost a year now but there's speculation he might follow Pruitt to UT. There's still a lot of "moving parts" with the defensive linemen.

One thing here...people lament about struggles signing every player the staff targets: that happens everywhere but it seems some think it's indigenous to Bama?

On the OL? Sewell, Petite-Frere, Brown, Ekiyor...along with those guys there's other OL they are watching.

If there is a RB signed look for Ford. He's signing next week.

FWIW, they're not done with DB's.

Ahhh thanks for the clarification Terry. I thought I'd remember him saying he wanted an early signing period, but as you've pointed out he just wanted an earlier NSD.

But for Saban to not see how it benefits "anybody" is disingenuous. He should look at his own grey shirting record for proof.
