šŸˆ David Pollack with a good question: "Who’s your favorite player that wasn’t a star, a household name, but still left a mark at UA?

Hitting the "way back"machine.
How bout our 2 time National championship QB....and AD at Bama...
Steve Sloan...from Cleveland Tenn
Started 64...& 65 Orange Bowls... ( Namath hurt and didn't start 64 Orange Bowls...but came in and played after Sloan got hurt)..
65....headlines..."Sloan shoots lights out". Vs Nebraska ...in the night time Orange Bowl

Later AD...with Bill Curry as HC...called them the " righteous brothers "
Later AD at UTC

This thread has ventured off the original topic a lot but glad it has because it has been great to read. Names I have not thought of for years. Brings back a lot of great memories and the Grizzard story should be put into a post hall of fame ....
Was it when someone threw out Al Bell? Geez. I can't say a damn thing. I'll hijack a thread on something that crosses my mind in a heartbeat.

Since we're watching the media try to tell us about a QB battle when we know it's about the #2...I'll go off on a bit of a tangent on QB depth charts. A short story ... but imagine this as fan: in TODAY's times with the 'net, social media, etc.

Al Bell > Mike Shula and another name or two you'll recognize.

I started my "dive" into Bama history in 1985. That fall...
  • Shula started, Sutton was the back-up, then David Smith. The next season...
  • Shula started, Smith was the back-up, then Vince Sutton. The next season...
  • Jeff Dunn started, Smith was the back-up, then Vince Sutton. The following year...
  • David Smith started, Dunn was the back-up, then Vince Sutton. The following year...
  • Hollingsworth was the starter, Dunn was the back-up....that's when Danny Woodson entered the picture.

John Sullins

Don't know. Damn. That's a good one.
It took a minute, but I got it.

@rick4bama mentioned McMIllian earlier in the thread. Sullins was on the same squad. Oh damn, Mike. This IS a good one.

I can't remember how to spell the guys name; Ephram, Efran, something like that. Thomas was his last name. In '90 getting a JUCO guy from MS was commonplace. He was from California: stuck out, ya know?

On the same squad as Sullins and Thomas? (A quick nod to @Kirk Van de Graaff here) Teague and Turner. London was on that team; Swinney, Curry...

On the 92 team Donnelly and Gaston and I am heading right off a cliff with this thread. LOL

In ā€˜89, Jeff Dunn was the starter before blowing out his knee and Hollingsworth was the backup. As for #3, it was a crapshoot. Scott Etter and even Cotis Nunley took snaps as the #3, before Woodson. Woodson was super talented but dumb as a damn brick!

I will add that Scott was a 2nd or 3rd year guy and Cotis was a JUCO transfer. Just before the Sugar Bowl, Coach Smith came into the QB room and told us all that Jeff wasn’t returning and that Gary would be the guy in ā€˜90. Backup and #3 would be determined that Spring. Little did anyone know that Coach Curry would be heading to Kentucky.

What was your thoughts on Curry leaving and why?

Dammit you left out Danny Woodson. :p

Willie Gaston. Brother Bill Oliver was DC and coached the DBs. The rule was if you get confused, play zone. Willie played a lot of zone…My memory says Willie dropped an interception in the end zone vs UF in 1994 SEC championship game. Next play was a UF TD. Lost game 24-23.

What about John Magnum and if not him his brother Kris who eventually transferred to Ole Miss I believe.
I think it's on the last page. It's a post from @Kirk Van de Graaff where he mentions Whitman. I've seen his image used a lot for "45 days 'til kickoff." Same thing with Magnum. I see him a lot on countdowns.

If he isn't, he should be a household name. In the Bama record books you'll find him at the top with INT's and PBU's.

Yeah I suspected John would be well enough known but maybe not Kris.
