šŸˆ David Pollack with a good question: "Who’s your favorite player that wasn’t a star, a household name, but still left a mark at UA?

Clay Whitehurst

I know that name, D. I can't place it...but I'm close.
Late night piss and it hit me like someone turning on the lights to wake you up...I did wait to post this.

In '84 and '85 I had two pretty serious battles with GBS. That was my senior year. I spent at least three months of that academic year in Huntsville Hospital.

It's a long story, but as short as possible I did a DEEP learning dive into UA football and its history during that period. I was a casual fan until that year...and then I was a fan who actually knew things. šŸ™ƒ

Whitehurst was either a frosh or soph at the time.

@TerryP

Around Whitehurst's time at UA, Me and all of my friends in my neighborhood would play backyard football. Growing up in Dothan (serious ag town) There were a lot of Auburn fans in that area. The neighborhood guys would all pick players from Bama/Barn that they wanted to "be" or emulate while playing. At that age I was just starting to really understand and get into football and started keeping up with players and where they were from, etc. Whitehurst was the first player I ever wanted to "be" when I grew up. :D

Some really nice names coming from everyone. Lots of memories
...I've just been looking over QB depth charts in the Bama football era's that are most familiar to me: from reading to witnessing.

When Hunter was at QB there was a guy running the 5's; Benny Rippetoe. There's some story there I'd like to hear about. He went from the 5's to the 3's as a sophomore (Terry Davis running 4's,) and the next season the two flipped depth chart positions. Terry Davis gets the start starter role while it was Benny's senior year while he was back with the 3's.

A lot remember the name Butch Hobson while few remember or know about Benny...Davis, Hunter, Hobson, Rippetoe were all on the depth charts those few years...Gary Rutledge was a SO Benny's SR year.

Keith Pugh- won a couple of state championships at Greenville then went to UA and was a part of 2 National Championships playing SE in a wishbone offense.

A guy from my days, Craig Sanderson out of Hamilton HS. Smooth route runner and great hands.
