🏈 Da'Shawn Hand arrested for DUI...

A few thoughts:

1. He appeared to be one of the highest character kids Saban has signed. Had all the makings of a great kid on and off the field.

2. Booze makes us do stupid sh*t. Even the smart people

3. If you've never drank and drove, feel free to throw the kid under the bus. I'm not that perfect though

4. I hope it's the ole conditioning punishment... Absolutely need DL's for FSU and he's a top 3 dude. I'm not someone to complain about punishments because we don't know how well he's done behind the scenes, punctuality, grades, community service, etc... He could be making great things happen on campus and made the 1 boo boo. (I'm also not one to criticize OTHER PROGRAMS for their discipline either... So if you are... Feel free to complain about Saban if/when he plays vs FSU).

5. Surprisingly the worst news of the off season! Could be worse...

COME ON MAN! THIS IS YOUR MONEY YEAR TOO...Sometimes that is what it takes to reach these guys. Letting them know this could be a million dollar decision. They are shocked to hear that sometimes. YES...this incident may have cost you over a million dollars if not more. This may be the difference between a second round pick at 5 mill or a 3rd round pick at 4-3.5 mill. Could be more than a mil. Not to mention letting the team down. Anyway.........you guys think he will be a 1st half suspension for FSU? Full game or none? Or even worse full 2nd game suspension ...lol

He has no previous (major) disciplinary issues. CNS will handle this internally (I imagine there will be several garbage cans for him to puke in as he...works out his issues). I expect him to start v. F$U.

Meh, we all make mistakes. Bad decision sure AND I think some folks here are making this out to be more than it is based on what information has been released.

If that car was parked off the right of way, why would the local police push this?

With the vehicle running it would indicate intent to drive in the middle of the summer. In the winter, you could at least reasonably suggest you were just trying to stay warm. Needing A/C to sleep in a vehicle when it's 70 degrees outside is a stretch.

Honestly, the police officer can't really determine intent on this, Hand either planned to sleep or fell asleep prior to driving off...If I were him, I'd error on the law and let Hand and his lawyer work this out with the DA.

From the article.

According to Alabama state law, Hand was deemed to be in “constructive possession” of the vehicle, and although he wasn’t driving and the vehicle was parked, the keys being in the car was the determinant that triggered the arrest.

Hand was parked in a near-campus parking lot, sitting in the driver’s seat with the headlights on and the vehicle cranked, but was asleep with the car in park. The arresting officer found Hand at 4:30 a.m. at the 1100 block of University Blvd. Bars in Tuscaloosa close at 2 a.m.

And I suppose a really good story for Coach Saban on how he planned to get home.

so true. proving intent is a HUGE part of anything like this, unless caught in the act. which, to me, he wasn't.

so just because the keys were in the car and the car engine was running, they decided to go ahead and arrest him? why not wake him up, ask him what's going on, and maybe get him a ride home. there are plenty of cops out there who would've done that. and yes, i know a few who would. but there are some who would look at the situation and think, "hey, i can get a dui arrest and make myself look good to the sgt./lt./capt./whoever" i'm not saying this was the case here, but things like that do happen.

and the part about finding him at 4:30 am and then saying bars in tuscaloosa close at 4:00 am...? irrelevant. he doesn't need to go to a bar to buy alcohol or get drunk.

Don't know about everyone else, but I feel a lot better about the situation. If a guy is taking a snooze and staying off the highway that just doesn't compute as being a danger to himself and especially others. I'd be surprised if a lot comes from this in court. I'd be most surprised if he doesn't get a chance to start in the season opener.

Tough call, I don't fault the cop at all for doing his/her job. Like I said, too hard for him/her to determine intent. That's what lawyers are for.

If I'm the HC of Alabama, I'd tell all the cops to do their job. I wouldn't want any homerism for my players or coaches.

I'd don't see how arresting Hand has any value in career advancement.

But wasn't he on the side of the road, meaning he drove to get to that point? I don't know all of the details, but driving to the point of passing out behind the wheel is way more different than just sleeping it off in your car in a parking lot or driveway.

Nothing suggests it wasn't poor judgment to me. But I went from 0 tolerance to believing another cop may have decided to handle it differently. Until someone completely fills in the gaps who knows what he was trying to accomplish, I'm feeling at least hopeful he knew enough to get off the road.

Clutter. No point in speculating, but this is obviously not a career-ending incident for Mr. Hand. He'll be fine.

Agreed. This is not nearly as bad as expected. After reading the above. I think he will start. If he was pulled over and failed a breath test and so forth... thats one thing. But sitting in a parked car with the AC on sleeping it off in the campus parking lot....come on. If it was the cops "buddy" he would have woke him up and got him home.

Not "on the side of the road" he was in the parking lot.
