🏈 Dan Wolken (USA Today) says Justin Field to transfer from UGA

Watching the SECG, I never understood the rhyme or reason for playing Fields. Nothing more than "I promised him that he would play and by God, he is getting some reps!" From what I gather, this was pretty much the entire year outside of garbage time reps.

I don't think the problem is Jake Fromm as much as it's the offensive philosophy that Chaney/Smart want to run. I have to believe that's why he is willing to sit out another year. Smart wants to go downhill and play action stuff. A bad fit is a bad fit. The next time around I would guess he'll be running a spread type attack.

Will he have to sit out a year?
In April, the NCAA’s Division I Council provided new guidance to schools regarding waivers for undergraduate transfers who felt they shouldn’t have to complete the NCAA-mandated year-in-residence before taking the field for their new team. Here are those guidelines. Read No. 1 very carefully.
1. The transfer is due to documented mitigating circumstances that are outside the student-athlete’s control and directly impact the health, safety and well-being of the student-athlete;
...
During Georgia’s win against Tennessee on Sept. 29, Georgia baseball player Adam Sasser was overheard by other students in the stands yelling, “Put the [n-word] in.” Sasser allegedly was referring to Fields, who backed up sophomore Jake Fromm. While the accusation against Sasser was being investigated by Georgia’s Equal Opportunity Office, Sasser was dismissed from the baseball team. Sasser later issued a public apology on Twitter that certainly seemed like an admission.
All of this has been documented by Georgia. So if Fields makes the waiver request, the NCAA panel that reviews that request would have access to all that information.
And it wouldn’t be a stretch at all if, in 2019, a young black man such as Fields said his safety and well-being might be affected by continuing to stay at a school where a white fellow athlete would refer to a black athlete by that word—even if it was lobbed from the stands while the player was on the field. Even if Fields wanted to transfer exclusively for playing time reasons, the NCAA would be foolish to challenge such an assertion and Georgia officials would be crazy to do anything except wish Fields well as he plays next season at his new school. No matter what anyone considers the real reason for the transfer, trying to force Fields to sit out would only make everyone else look terrible.
I don't see this as a question of should, but a question of would.

Would
the NCAA take into consideration the racial atmosphere if Fields chooses to go this route? I'd say, "yes. Yes they would."

Adversity or get the QB controversy resolved
We can look at this from a singular point of view and focus on the QB position. However, I believe that's short-sighted and ignoring the bigger picture.

@UAgrad93, in an earlier post, points to where the "problem" lies when he mentions "Nothing more than 'I promised him that he would play and by God, he is getting some reps!'" A recruit, who feels like he didn't get what was promised to him, is leaving the program. It's ironic we're seeing this on the heels of quite a few reports about Webb being told of his future role regarding the offensive tackle position when other schools were telling him he's better suited as an interior lineman.

I don't believe anyone as any issues with a player being told "you'll get a shot at this position." We've seen it with guys who want to try their hands on offense all the while knowing they'd likely be better off as a defensive back. I do believe we should have issues with a kid being told he'll get a shot at one position when he's physically not built for said position. (IE: No one wants a 6' 3" tackle.)

If that coach did say something like this! I agree that Fields shouldn't sit out! I also have read that he may be going to Colorado when Coach Tucker is going?

Justin logged 81 offensive snaps in 12 games. What a waste of his freshman season.

We know he played in at least on special teams play and no idea if he played more on special teams.

The only reason he got that many was to keep him from leaving mid-season like Kelly Bryant. Georgia fans were screaming for him to replace Fromm during and after the LSU game, so I know Kurbee let him in just enough to keep him interested in practice and the gameplan. Heck, he was a near lock to run the ball in any other situation outside of fourth quarter mop up duty against UMass. I think Kirbs did a good job in tricking Fields to coming to Athens to keep him away from other schools, and to have a notch on his recruiting belt, but Fromm is a solid quarterback, and will be tough to beat out with how consistent he is.

This one really doesn't make sense to me. Fromm is prolly gone after next year if he continues to play at the level he did the second half of the season.

That would give Fields two years to run the show. More than enough time to make your mark and show the league what you can do.

Dude may have the talent and just not be able to run the offense yet Kirby is like Saban. Talent alone is not going to get you playing time. You have to do the right things off the filed and show you are willing to work within the framework of the offense on the field. Maybe some of those things are missing with him and he doesn't see it.
