Berea, Ky. - Alabama's 2015 recruiting class received another feather in its cap on Friday when Damien Harris picked the Tide over Kentucky and Ohio State.

"Through a lot of hard thinking, I've decided with my family, friends, whoever has helped me in this process - I've decided that I'm going to further my education, get a degree and continue a football career at the University of Alabama," Harris said as he grabbed a crimson Alabama hat. "Roll Tide."

Harris is rated as the top running back in the nation and is the sixth five-star recruit to commit to Alabama in the 2015 class. Harris said joining other top-flight was a factor in his decision.

"Going into a situation like that where you're playing with a great players, it opens up a lot of opportunity for yourself," Harris said. "You know, split carries, not necessarily take - not one player take too much of a beating. It'll be good. We just have to, once I get there, we'll have to work out playing time, rotation, all that, but it'll just help me as a player."

Harris named one player in particular - No. 1 overall quarterback commit Blake Barnett - as someone he's become close with.

"He's become the closest recruit as far as nationally that I've had the opportunity to meet," Harris said. "He's a great player, and it seems like every time we play together we seem to win. We won at the opening, we won the UnderArmour game, so why not try to continue that tradition of winning together."

Harris made his decision shortly after taking an official visit to Alabama for the Iron Bowl on Nov. 29, 2014. The pitch Alabama head coach Nick Saban gave Harris wasn't one he expected.

"I mean, their program speaks for itself so we didn't talk about that much," Harris said. "But if I had to notice one thing it was probably the fact that being a great program like it is, you would think he would come in an talk about how they were going to put me in the draft or develop me as a player or things like that, but he really stressed how they were going to push me academically and things they would to do to better me as a person, not just the football aspect.

"So that was kind of different. I didn't really expect him to come in and talk about just life and academics, just being the kind of program they are, but that was just something he brought to my attention."

That doesn't mean that the prospect of playing pro football isn't important to Harris.

"They just feed backs into the league and that's the ultimate goal after college, to try to make it to the next level," Harris said. "That was one of the biggest factors, and it was hard to pass up a great opportunity like that."

Harris' commitment to the Tide ends a four-year process that the running back is relieved to see end. Harris originally committed to Michigan in 2013 before re-opening his recruitment early in 2014. Harris narrowed his list to three schools just before the new year before deciding to roll with the Tide.

Harris spoke highly of all three schools while repeatedly saying Alabama was the best fit for him. Much of the hometown crowd gathered in Madison Southern High School's gym, including Kentucky player Matt Elam, were hoping for a Kentucky commitment, but the draw to stay close to home wasn't strong enough.

"I mean, not having to move too far away from family and friends, them getting to come see me every week, but in the end I just decided that wasn't necessarily - obviously that's going to be great; that's something that a player wants to experience, their family and friends coming to watch them play on Saturdays, but that's not all you can take into consideration," Harris said.

Harris knows he will continue to get recruited by Kentucky and Ohio State until National Signing Day, but he said he won't be listening.

"I know a lot of schools will still try to see if they can get you to flip or things like that, but now that I've made my decision I'm solid in it," Harris said. "I'm not looking to search for other schools. I'm not interested anymore. I want to be solid in my commitment, so it's good after four years that this process is starting to end."

Another Tim Couch or Jared Lorenzen? Is this guy serious? You're going to compare Alabama's All-Time leading rusher, a school with countless world class players, with those two guys? Acting like Alexander is not beloved by our fans? I can't stop laughing at that comparison/analogy.
