Cousins recalls the 'hardest hit I've ever received'
Former Michigan State quarterback and current Washington Redskins signal caller Kirk Cousins vividly remembers the hardest hit he has ever taken. It occurred five years ago during his college career in a bowl game against Alabama.
The Spartans faced the Crimson Tide in the 2011 Capital One Bowl in Orlando in a game that quickly turned sour for the Big 10 team. Alabama won the game 49-7, and Cousins was unable to finish the contest because of UA's pressure.
In a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), Cousins detailed the hit that is still imprinted in his memory from that contest.
"The hardest hit I've ever received was against the Alabama Crimson Tide at the 2011 Capital One (Bowl)," Cousins said. "Courtney Upshaw came off the left edge, also known as the blind side, and hit me so hard that I felt like I'd been in a car accident, and that was the only game in college that I'd left and did not return, so that is the biggest one I ever took."
One of Upshaw's two sacks was an easy one for the former Crimson Tide linebacker, who is now a member of the Baltimore Ravens. Upshaw was left untouched to take an easy, clean shot at Cousins off the left side of the line of scrimmage. The teeth-rattling hit forced Cousins to fumble the football, and it was kicked backward for a huge loss for the Spartans.
Cousins was sacked four times at the "Happiest Place on Earth" but recalls the Upshaw hit the most. Because of his aggressive and tenacious play, Upshaw was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 Capital One Bowl.
