🏈 Countdown to kickoff 2017

George Teague....was this not the greatest play ever?

I heard an interview / saw it somewhere where Antonio Langham said "George got beat on that play. He was out of position when Thomas caught the ball. He had to run him down, he'd never heard the last of it if Thomas had scored."

I remember George did have a lot of ground to make up and he did. I'll never forget that play. I was fortunate enough to be there. Roll Tide!

What was funny was that Thomas, being a track star, was considered one of the fastest players on the field and he got reeled in like a small fish on a hook. Teague did say he blew the coverage and figured he better go get em or else. But his later pick 6 was a back breaker as well.

It was unfortunate that Keith Jackson totally fouled up the importance of the play in real time. I believe Bob Griese had it figured it out much quicker. Because a flag was called against Bama Jackson thought the play was for naught. In actuality, had Teague not taken the ball away from the mouth of the south the Bama penalty would have simply been declined by Miami and it would at least been first and goal. Instead, because Teague took the ball they had no choice but accept the 5-yard penalty which took the ball back close to the original line of scrimmage.

You know, I watch this play from time to time on YouTube, and you're exactly right. Keith Jackson, love the man to death and he was my first real love in college football as a child, definitely downplayed it and had me thinking the play never counted. I was eight years old, so the chsnces of me watching the game and understsnding at that age were slim, but even as a grown up it comes across as the play never stood.

There was an article that came out that called it "The greatest play that never was." So I get your confusion. Willie Gaston was the corner that got beat by Thomas, but I figured Teague must have had coverage on the deep guy the way he spoke afterward. Still, it was a great play by Teague that I have never seen, before or since, like that rundown. It was truly the greatest play I've seen in an Alabama game.

Yes, but Jackson's excitement is what has sealed that as the probably the best non-play of all time.
