AL.com caught up with Bateman at Thursday's media day for the Peach Bowl in Atlanta for a quick discussion about the past, present and future.
Q: How has this experience been at Alabama?
A: "It's been an awesome four years here. Funnest time of my life. Learned a lot. Made life-long friends, so I cherish every moment of it."
Q: Was it a difficult decision to transfer for your final season of eligibility?
A: "No, not at all. Everyone's seen what Jalen's done here. He deserves everything he's got and it's just going to keep going up from here."
Q: Have you made any progress picking your next school?
A: "There's still a bunch out there and I'm still trying to find the best thing for me. I'm really not worried about all that right now."
Q: You've been part of three different quarterback competitions. How was this one?
A" "It was close. It was neck to neck during the summer. But obviously, you can't say anything bad about this guy (nodding toward Hurts). He deserves everything."
Q: With such high stakes, can animosity creep into your mind?
A: "Not at all. If the guy is a tool or something, maybe. But Jalen is first class. There's nothing bad to say about him."
Q: What were some of the better memories you made in four years at Alabama?
A: "Last year for sure. Everything about that season. I got to play a little bit. That was fun. Then this year, watching what the 18-, 19-year old kids are doing out there. As much as I want to be out there playing, it's been pretty fun to watch."
Q: What about Hurts' maturity makes him different?
A: "It's unreal. I've never seen someone maintain their composure like that in brutal situations. He doesn't flinch."
Q: When you get him away from the field, can you see Hurts' less- serious/fun side?
A: "I can shake him. He's funny. We carry on. We have fun in meetings and in the locker room and stuff. We have a close group. I'm going to miss that for sure."
Q: You and David Cornwell have quite the pregame battles pretending to be receivers and cornerbacks. How has that gone?
A: "You can ask him about that." (smiles)
Q: Who got the best of those battles?
A: "He's a cheater. But he probably caught more balls."
Q: You're the holder in placekicking situations. How much pressure is that?
A: "That's my whole thing. My whole philosophy is try not to be remembered. Because you think of Tony Romo against the Seahawks and a number of other guys."
Q: Does it really matter to have the laces out?
A: "For first-time kickers, I guess. For Griff, not as much. He just likes the spot. He said the laces can face him, he doesn't care. As long as it's where he's expecting it."
